Role Summary

The Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse is responsible for assessment, planning, and implementation of individualized, holistic, person‑centered nursing care for patients, families, or community. The nurse coordinates patient care within a multidisciplinary health team and applies scientific nursing theories and processes to treat patients as physical, social, and spiritual individuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a clinical resource, assisting personnel to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document nursing care in the unit.
  • Communicate and interact with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care, acting as a patient advocate when necessary.
  • Ensure communication between nursing management and the unit to eliminate patient‑care problems or issues.
  • Assess, plan, and implement advanced nursing care in a specialized field in accordance with standard nursing care procedures, SOPs, nursing theory, and medical direction.
  • Initiate, direct, and maintain emergency treatment (resuscitation) as indicated to any patient in any ward or department of the hospital.
  • Interview patients and families to obtain relevant background information, identify problems, and evaluate patient behavior and needs.
  • Participate as a professional member of the multidisciplinary team to evaluate, develop, and implement health‑care plans and treatment regimes.
  • Conduct rounds with physicians/medical practitioners to review patient conditions, develop nursing care plans, and participate in the care of all patients in the unit.
  • Evaluate patient care needs, initiate individualized nursing care plans, and coordinate patient services.
  • Prepare day and night shift documentation reflecting patient status, patient‑staff ratio, and problems.
  • Provide input and standards in formulating patient‑care policy and procedures for the hospital.
  • Ensure the provision of a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Optimize and maintain quality, effective, and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
  • Evaluate, set standards, and monitor safe utilization of supplies and equipment.
Transformation and Innovation
  • Actively participate as a member of a team to achieve goals and collaborate with other hospital departments to provide appropriate support services.
  • Co‑coordinate with Clinical Facilitation Department and other multidisciplinary members to address ongoing educational needs of nursing staff and patients.
  • Provide in‑service training, mentoring, and evaluation of learning experiences for nursing staff and students.
  • Participate in orientation of new staff and in‑service training.
  • Advise and inform staff on current and revised policies and procedures.
  • Allocate staff to promote optimal use of skills for individualized patient care through sound clinical judgment.
  • Adjust staff levels to meet acuity needs.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain skill and knowledge levels.
  • Stay current with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures.
  • Build collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goals and maintain effective communication within the unit and the multidisciplinary team.
