Job Description: Chemical Engineer – Powder Coating Line
Position Summary

The Chemical Engineer is responsible for monitoring, optimizing, and improving the chemical and surface preparation processes used in the powder coating line. This role ensures proper surface treatment, consistent coating quality, efficient production flow, and compliance with safety and environmental standards. The engineer will also support troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and technical training for operators.

Key Responsibilities
1. Surface Preparation & Chemical Process Control
  • Manage and optimize pre-treatment processes (degreasing, phosphating, rinsing, passivation).
  • Monitor chemical concentrations, pH, temperatures, and conductivity to maintain coating quality.
  • Conduct regular chemical analysis and adjust dosing schedules.
  • Ensure chemical tanks, baths, and spray systems are operating within required parameters.
2. Powder Coating Operations Support
  • Monitor powder application parameters (KV settings, gun distance, powder flow rate, booth conditions).
  • Improve coating adhesion, coverage efficiency, and finish consistency.
  • Support color changes, filtration efficiency, and powder recovery systems.
  • Analyze and reduce coating defects (orange peel, pinholes, fisheye, undercure/overcure, poor adhesion).
3. Quality Assurance & Testing
  • Perform coating thickness testing, adhesion testing, curing tests, and surface quality checks.
  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications, standards (ASTM, ISO), and internal quality requirements.
  • Investigate root causes of quality deviations and implement corrective/preventive actions.
4. Process Improvement & Production Optimization
  • Improve line speed, reduce chemical/powder consumption, and lower rework/scrap rates.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen).
  • Optimize curing oven temperatures and conveyor speeds for energy efficiency.
5. Safety, Maintenance & Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with chemical handling, PPE requirements, and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to maintain chemical systems, pumps, ovens, and recovery units.
  • Prepare SOPs, work instructions, chemical reports, and process documentation.
  • Support training of operators on chemical handling and process control.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in powder coating, metal finishing, or chemical surface treatment (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of chemical reactions, surface engineering, and coating technology.
  • Familiarity with testing tools (DFT gauges, cross-hatch adhesion tools, gloss meter).
  • Good analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to interpret PFDs, SOPs, and technical manuals.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and safety awareness.
Preferred Experience
  • Knowledge of phosphate systems (iron or zinc), zirconium conversion coatings, or chrome-free technologies.
  • Experience with automated powder coating lines and electrostatic spraying systems.
  • Exposure to quality systems (ISO 9001, ISO 12944, automotive standards).
Benefits:
  • Salaries between 7,000 - 10,000 Basic.
  • Medical insurance class B (BUPA).
  • Annual leave 30 days.
