Job Summary
The Tooling Engineer III will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of tooling and equipment at our injection molding plant in Tijuana. This role requires an in-depth understanding of injection molding processes, manufacturing, and tooling engineering, with a focus on continuous improvement to optimize productivity and ensure quality in production.
The ideal candidate should have extensive technical experience, the ability to work in a dynamic environment, and act as a leader within the tooling engineering team. They will work closely with other departments, including production, quality, and maintenance, to ensure tooling is appropriate for manufacturing processes and meets customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Tool Design & Development: Design and modify molds, dies, and other manufacturing tools based on product specifications and production requirements.
- Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Oversee and ensure that molds and tools are maintained in optimal condition through an effective preventive maintenance program and troubleshoot failures in real-time.
- Molding Process Optimization: Collaborate with production teams to identify opportunities for improvement in injection molding processes, ensuring production efficiency and minimizing downtime.
- Supplier Management: Manage and coordinate the manufacture and repair of tooling with external vendors, ensuring quality, deadlines, and cost-effectiveness.
- Failure Analysis: Evaluate and perform failure analysis on tools and molds to identify and correct design, material, or process issues affecting product quality.
- Training & Leadership: Act as a mentor and leader for other tooling engineers and technicians, promoting a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Compliance: Ensure all tools and molds comply with local and international safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 7 years of experience in tooling engineering, preferably in injection molding or plastic manufacturing.
- Technical Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of injection molding processes, tooling design, failure analysis, CAD (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other), and simulation software.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively in teams.
- Languages: Advanced English is preferred due to the international nature of the company.
- Availability: Willingness to travel occasionally to the corporate headquarters in San Marcos, CA, or to supplier sites as needed.
- Additional Requirements:
- Experience in molding tooling and process improvements in high-volume manufacturing environments.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles is a plus.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
