INSTINCT - Sustainable pest management through online monitoring and artificial intelligence for key pests of the South Tyrolean Agriculture - Project code: EFRE1026; Programme: "EFRE-FESR 2021-2027"
Deadline for sending applications and publications: 24.04.2025 at 12:00 PM (noon)
Description of the research activity:
The project develops and validates a new process for precision agriculture, reducing the use of insecticides in the control of Cydia pomonella and Drosophila suzukii. Specific sensors will be introduced for the automatic recognition of adult specimens of these species in orchards, combined with environmental sensors to collect climatic and phenological data. The technologist will develop new sensors and chemical ecology solutions, leveraging artificial intelligence and attractant substances identified in previous research. The experiments will focus on Cydia pomonella, including laboratory and field tests to validate the sensors and smart traps. The goal is to innovate the monitoring and control of the target species using techniques such as ‘mass trapping’ and ‘attract & kill,’ including ‘female removal,’ improving the sustainable management of orchards and reducing environmental impact.
