What we’re looking for

We are looking for a fire and safety specialist to provide services to shipbuilders, ship owners and designers. The purpose of this role is mainly to perform appraisal of fire and safety plans for new construction and existing passenger ships and yachts in accordance with the applicable statutory standards and class rules.

The successful candidate will be based at the LR Trieste Office (Italy) part of the LR Global Technical Support Office. Proficiency in Italian is required.

The role
  • Review and appraise fire and safety plans (e.g. passive fire protection, fire detection, suppression, fixed fire extinguishing systems, escape and lifesaving appliances) for cruise ships and yachts in accordance with the applicable statutory standards and class rules.
  • Provide sound technical and regulatory guidance to stakeholders during the design and construction phase and during the vessel life cycle.
  • Participate in meetings or workshops where required.
  • Perform appraisals and provide specialist advice related to the fire & safety discipline for service delivery, research and development work and national or international standards or regulatory bodies within agreed parameters, including budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • Undertake project management where applicable, including monitoring project progress, spend against budget and contract requirements.
  • Discuss / present deliverables with the internal / external client and suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Conduct occasional site visits at various shipyards, client sites, testing laboratories or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
  • Assess risks and work in a safe manner at all times, robustly implementing health and safety rules, instructions and systems and refusing to undertake work that compromises safety or health.
  • Report incidents (including near misses and safety observations) in a timely manner and raise health and safety concerns with line manager.
What you bring
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyds Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of a two‑year programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea‑going experience as a certificated ships officer.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in Italian and good command of English.
  • Knowledge of classification, certification and verification and familiarity with IACS rules is desirable.
  • Previous experience or exposure to fire and safety matters, specifically in the passenger ships or yachting industry or in a technical office.
  • Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills and ability to provide technical, commercial and people communication.
