Job description

At South Gloucestershire Council we are immensely proud of the skills, abilities, and compassion of all our social workers and wider team members. As a Team Manager, you will provide essential support, recognition, guidance, and professional oversight to team members. We are looking for an enthusiastic, strong, and committed leader to join our management group within our 0-25 Disabilities Service, leading the 16-25 Young Adults with Disabilities Team. We are pleased to say that we provide an Ofsted rated 'Good' service, our Ofsted report can be viewed here; we are seeking additional driven professionals to help us to collectively maintain and build on this for the ongoing betterment of the children and young people of South Gloucestershire. What you will be doing While you will have the usual targets to achieve, you will be doing so with a very supportive leadership team around you that are always accessible from the very top down. If you can focus on the people behind the social worker title - we know you will achieve the best for our children and families.

Responsibilities
  • Regularly, you will support our social workers to build relationships, undertake assessments, develop plans and deliver purposeful evidence-based interventions to secure the best outcomes for children in need of support, protection and care.
  • You will be an adaptive and responsive manager, combining a hybrid model of remote and office-based working with face-to-face management (where essential and secure) to meet team and wider service objectives.
  • Maintaining a focus on the individuals in your team, you will promote personal and professional development through the pathways and programmes offered by our wider Children's Services division.
  • You will have the support, guidance and supervision of an experienced and accessible Senior Leadership Team. We're a positive, proactive team, with supportive management who listen to ideas, and act on them - fast.
  • Coming out of Covid, we've seen rapidly increasing demand to support children and families with ever more complex needs. We recognised the pressure this was placing on our frontline teams and to ensure we can deliver on our high ambitions for our children and young people, we're making significant new investments in these areas.
  • We're expanding our frontline teams. We've created 60 new roles, which will mean consistently lower caseloads for our social workers, so they can deliver genuinely child-centred support.
  • We're making it easier for staff to work flexibly, enabling them to work how and where they need to, to do their jobs as well as they can.
  • We're strengthening our reward offer to recognise the fantastic job our staff do.
  • We're adopting clinical supervision to support staff because we recognise that our work can be tough emotionally. It builds on our training offer, helping staff to develop critical thinking skills and support their work with families.
  • We're building early intervention partnership capacity because we know we can achieve better results for families if we get multi‑agency working right.
  • We're increasing what we spend on evidence-based specialist expertise and capabilities, including specialist trauma support and an in‑house psychologist to support families.
  • We're introducing new initiatives like the Mockingbird extended family model in fostering, a Caring Dads scheme and a new approach to domestic abuse.
  • We're enhancing an already exceptional training and development offer. A new systemic practice academy will drive our focus on relationship based social work.
  • Finally, it might be boring, but we're investing in our systems and processes, because we want them to help us, rather than hold us back in our work.
Qualifications
  • We require you to hold a professional qualification eg. MA or BA in social work, DipSW and have a current registration with Social Work England.
  • You need to have an extensive knowledge in a relevant setting such as Adult Social Care, and demonstrable comprehension of the Mental Capacity Act, Best Interest Assessments, or similar relevant experience.
  • You will be able to give examples of your experience of managing staff, or supervision of other professionals.
  • You must have experience of developing and motivating a team to fulfil the changing demands of the service.
  • Given the elements of the role, you will be able to evidence your ability to lead teams to achieve optimum performance in delivering excellent social care services for children.
  • You will have evidence of on‑going continuous professional development and a thorough knowledge of current legislation and practice relating to your service.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (child and adult) is obtained for this post.
  • You will be required to travel widely within the authority so you must either have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
  • Business Insurance will need to be added to your current car insurance policy.
Benefits & Commitments
  • We invest in the careers of our people and we are recognised for the quality, breadth and depth of our training and development offer, which helps our people make the greatest long‑term difference in their work.
  • As part of our benefits package, you will receive generous annual leave (pro rata), employee wellbeing support and you will have access to a range of staff discounts, including eye tests, travel, shopping and leisure activities.
  • We recognise that our diverse team of skilled and dedicated people make us a great place to work. We welcome applications from everyone and ensure that individuals are selected, promoted and developed on the basis of their merits and abilities.
  • Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.
  • We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of.
  • We're working with the most vulnerable in our community to help them achieve what they want in life.
  • We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.
