Job description
Nuclear Safety Case Engineering Graduate Programme

Location: Faslane, Helensburgh, GB, G84 8HL

Onsite or Hybrid: OnSite

Programme title: Nuclear Safety Case Engineering Graduate Programme

Salary: Minimum £35,000. Salary is dependent on location, role, and qualifications.

Role ID: 66913

What will you do on the programme?

As a Graduate Nuclear Safety Case Engineer at Babcock, you’ll help ensure some of the UK’s most critical nuclear operations remain safe and secure. Every project we deliver depends on robust safety cases, and you’ll contribute to the assessments, documentation, and expert advice that make complex work possible.

You’ll get involved in identifying and analysing potential hazards, failures, and faults – and help develop solutions to prevent them. This could mean supporting hazard identification studies, contributing to periodic safety reviews, or providing technical input into assessments that keep our facilities operating safely. You’ll learn how to produce and maintain safety documentation that shows risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), working alongside experienced safety case authors, human factors specialists, radiation protection advisors, and engineers from across the business.

How is the programme structured?

This two‑year programme is designed to give you a broad understanding of safety case development. During this time, you’ll complete placements that expose you to a wide range of work, including safety case authoring, hazard analysis, compliance reviews, and environmental safety.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have built a strong foundation in hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety case development – ready to take the next step in your career.

How do we develop and support you?

From day one, you’ll receive structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship to help you excel throughout your programme and beyond.

You’ll join our Graduate Development Programme, featuring expert‑led masterclasses on communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing.

We also offer tailored technical training and one‑to‑one mentoring to support your journey toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, including full guidance and fee coverage.

What rewards and benefits will you get?

We want you to feel supported, valued and excited about what’s ahead. That’s why we offer a comprehensive package designed to support your development, your wellbeing and your life outside of work too.

In addition to a minimum starting salary of £35,000, you’ll benefit from:

  • A minimum of 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, with agile working options subject to discussion with your manager
  • Generous pension and employee share schemes
  • Flexible benefits, including cycle to work scheme, discounts
  • Wellbeing support, covering mental, physical, financial, and social wellbeing, with services like our Employee Assistance Programme, digital GP service, and health checks.

You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities.

What do you need to apply?
  • You’ll need a BSc or BEng (Hons) degree in Engineering, Science or Maths. Relevant disciplines include Nuclear Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Chemical Process.
  • A postgraduate qualification such as an MSc or MEng in Nuclear Science would be particularly valuable.
  • Many of our graduate programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK.
Where will you be based?

Places on our Safety Case and Hazard Management programme for Autumn 2026 are available at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland.

Babcock’s HM Naval Base Clyde operation provides highly specialist engineering support services, including the management of critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities. We also deliver operational maintenance, upgrades, and repairs to support Royal Navy vessels, including the Vanguard and Astute‑Class nuclear submarines based in Scotland.

In this location, your work will focus on supporting the safe operation, maintenance and upgrade of nuclear facilities that are home to the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. You’ll be involved in safety assessments, hazard reviews and compliance checks that keep both people and assets safe in a highly regulated environment.

Ready to apply?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the programme may close early if we receive a high volume of interest. To give yourself the best chance of being considered, we strongly recommend submitting your application and completing any required online assessments as soon as possible.
