Job Profile: Education Manager

Report to: Director of Communications & Public Affairs

Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Education Manager will lead on the BBFC’s education output, both internally and externally. You will actively promote the work of the department to key external stakeholders. Alongside the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, you will write and develop the strategic vision for the department, including setting clear goals and objectives for the team and ensuring alignment with the wider business strategy. You’ll deliver classroom talks to students on the BBFC’s work, draft and develop classroom resources for teachers, manage our BBFC Youth Panel and lead key initiatives with industry partners such as our Create the Card Competitions. You will also be responsible for the line management of the Communications and Education Officer.

Key Duties & Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • To oversee the BBFC’s educational output and strategy, liaising where necessary with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • To write and develop a clear strategy for extending the reach and engagement of our education activity and resources to key audiences including teachers, parents, and children.
  • Content Development & Management
  • To proactively research and develop new educational resources that are linked to the curriculum.
  • To be responsible for all our education content online, including on the main BBFC website, and also the promotion of our education work and resources on social media.
  • To be responsible for our direct to teacher marketing campaigns, including growing the BBFC’s education newsletter database.

Stakeholder Engagement & Outreach

  • To liaise with external educational agencies and partners, and where appropriate, establish new relationships to build on the BBFC education department’s outreach work.
  • To oversee, manage, and deliver the BBFC’s virtual and in-person seminars programme to schools, universities, festivals, and any relevant education organisations.
  • Youth Engagement
  • To oversee and manage the BBFC’s Youth Panel and its programme of events and activities.
  • To work closely with the Communications Team to elevate the Youth Panel's role externally.

Financial Management

  • To be responsible for the BBFC’s education budget, ensuring correct allocation of funds to meet the objectives of the department.
  • To pitch for and forecast future budgets.

Team Leadership

  • Line management of the Communications and Education Officer, setting goals and objectives, and providing coaching and mentoring.

Research & Industry Awareness

  • To contribute to relevant BBFC research, including compliance and policy projects, that cover youth and/or education interests.
  • To keep abreast of educational and technological developments, in addition to BBFC publications, research material, and legal or legislative developments likely to affect the BBFC’s education work.

General Duties

  • To carry out any other duties of a similar nature as may from time to time be required by Management.

  • Passion for Education and Child Protection: A genuine commitment to the BBFC's mission of empowering informed viewing choices and protecting children.
  • Professional office based experience outside of an education setting.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational / Professional Qualifications:

  • Good standard of English.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in Education, Media Studies, Film Studies, Communications, or a related discipline is highly desirable.
  • PGCE is desirable
  • An Enhanced DBS check is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Proven experience in educational programme development, including Classroom/Teaching and presentation experience for at least five years.
  • Experience engaging with various age groups and educational settings (e.g., primary, secondary, higher education, informal learning environments).
  • Media regulation/compliance experience or good knowledge of, and interest in, UK media regulation
  • Experience of working in an office based environment

  • Website and other copywriting experience

  • Line management

Understanding of the UK Educational Landscape: Familiarity with relevant PSHE curriculums across the four nations; understanding of relevant media and film studies qualifications; awareness of educational policy, and relevant regulatory frameworks.

Understanding of Child Development: Knowledge of how children learn about film, media, and online behaviours at school.

Digital Literacy and Platform Experience: IT literate; proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for content creation, delivery, and audience engagement.

  • Skills / Knowledge / Aptitude:
  • Research skills – including ability to process and analyse data.
  • Understanding of the film and media industry in the UK.
  • Understanding of and interest in online child safety issues.
  • Other Requirements
  • Willingness to work outside standard office hours.
  • Willingness to travel.

  • Salary: £45,000 per annum
