JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Responsibilities

Professional duties of a teacher are as described in the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, and related sections. Duties include:

  • Exercise of general professional duties: carry out professional duties as required by circumstances and under the direction of the principal or board as applicable.
  • Exercise of particular duties: perform such duties as may be reasonably assigned from time to time by the principal, the board, or the school in which the teacher is required to work.
  • Planning: planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • General duties: promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters including further education and careers; maintain records and reports on pupils as appropriate; communicate with parents; cooperate with external bodies; participate in relevant meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting: provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development: participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods; participate in opportunities for training and professional development; advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety: maintain good order and discipline; safeguard health and safety on and off school premises; participate in curriculum and pastoral meetings.
  • Public Examinations: participate in preparing pupils for public examinations, assess and report on such assessments, and supervise during examinations.
  • Management/Administration: contribute to appointment processes, coordinate or manage work of other teachers, participate in curriculum and pastoral development and administration tasks; attendance at assemblies; manage attendance and supervision of pupils as required.
  • Hours of work: comply with the agreed number of days and hours, and ensure appropriate break times; understand the year and week definitions; adhere to established policies on work hours and breaks.
  • Staff cover: supervise and teach pupils when a teacher is unavailable, within the defined school/board policies.
  • General review: the job description is subject to change to meet circumstances, with additional duties of a similar nature as required. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations and equality in line with equal opportunities legislation.
Person Specification
Section 1 — Essential Criteria

The following essential criteria will initially be measured at shortlisting and may be explored in interview. Please clearly indicate on your application how you meet these criteria.

  • Qualifications/ Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree prepared to teach Psychology as the main subject.
  • Experience: Demonstrable experience of teaching Psychology and Health & Social Care in a post-primary school (including teaching practice); experience using diverse approaches to support and challenge pupils of all abilities.
  • Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Section 2 — Essential Criteria
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of up-to-date specifications for a range of qualifications within Psychology; knowledge of teaching strategies for different learning styles; knowledge of current assessment methods; knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning.
  • Skills/Abilities: Effective classroom management; ability to meet the needs of children of all abilities; inspire and challenge pupils to raise standards.
  • Personal Qualities: Commitment to raising standards; hardworking, enthusiastic, organised and dedicated; inspiring and innovative classroom practitioner with high expectations for accountability and consistency; alignment with school ethos.
  • Values Orientation: High commitment to the school ethos and values; provide evidence of how experience reflects the school’s values.
Section 3 — Desirable Criteria
  • Qualifications and Experience: Experience of teaching Psychology at Level 3 in a post-primary school with positive outcomes (teaching practice acceptable); experience of teaching Level 3 Health & Social Care with positive outcomes (teaching practice acceptable).
  • Have qualifications, training, or experience to assist with extra-curricular provision (e.g., sport, music, drama).

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If appointed to a post involving regulated activity, an enhanced disclosure of criminal background will be required. You will be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
