Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team as an Assistant Project Manager, supporting the delivery of innovative highways and technology schemes on one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects. With 15 years remaining on this programme, the role offers a rare combination of career growth, variety, and long-term stability.

You will be involved in projects throughout the full lifecycle—from feasibility to handover—working on schemes that range from safety improvements and environmental enhancements to cutting-edge technology and structural works. No two days will be the same, and you’ll have the chance to develop your skills while contributing to projects that make a real difference to road users and communities.

This is more than just a job; it’s an opportunity to shape the future of our roads, progress your career, and enjoy the security of a role within a major long-term project. If you’re looking for a position that combines challenge, excitement, and flexibility, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you’ll be at the heart of delivering projects that make a real difference to the UK’s strategic road network. You will:

  • Build strong collaborative relationships with project teams and key stakeholders—both internal and external—ensuring shared understanding of objectives, reviewing performance, and working together to find solutions.
  • Champion compliance and clarity, supporting adherence to the DBFO contract, defining roles and responsibilities, managing risks and issues promptly, and maintaining accurate records including change management.
  • Shape and implement project plans, ensuring activities are well-organised, properly resourced, and aligned to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Support projects through their full lifecycle, from feasibility and design to construction, contributing to investment proposals that drive value for our clients.
  • Develop robust cost profiles, identifying key risks and resource requirements to keep projects on track.
  • Proactively manage risks and constraints, escalating where necessary and implementing practical solutions to overcome challenges.
  • Work closely with Framework Contractors and Designers, setting clear expectations for health and safety, time, and cost performance, and taking action where needed to ensure success.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives, supporting our commitment to net zero and biodiversity net gain.
  • Collaborate with construction and supervision teams, ensuring permits, certificates, and site reporting are managed accurately and efficiently.
Who We’re Looking For – Key Requirements

We’re looking for someone who brings energy, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. You will have:

  • Proven experience working in teams to successfully deliver multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with integrity and the ability to build relationships and engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Commercial awareness, with the ability to manage contracts and drive project performance.
  • Resilience and adaptability to handle conflicting priorities and overcome challenges constructively.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills to clarify strategies and ensure shared understanding.
  • Experience managing project plans, including detailed stage plans with contractors, designers, and internal partners.

Personal Attributes:

  • Proactive problem-solving approach.

  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage your own workload effectively.
