About the role:

The organisation’s vision is for a thriving tea industry which is socially just and environmentally sustainable. The priority challenges that we seek to address are the economics of tea (including living wages and living incomes), equality (especially for women and children) and the environment (including climate change mitigation and adaptation).

The Environment and Climate Lead is responsible for providing technical expertise on environmental and climate issues across the organisation’s work. This is a strategic role within the organisation that will drive key partnerships, implement strategic initiatives and organisational growth to achieve long-term objectives on climate and environment across all company activities, including advice on project design and implementation, support on business pilots, guidance to the membership and input into policy recommendations for the tea industry. The post holder should have a working knowledge on livelihoods and gender and how they impact and influence environmental objectives.

Reporting to the Head of Programmes, the Lead will use their in-depth contextual knowledge, technical, and practical expertise to deliver the organisation’s ambition for a Carbon neutral tea sector that does not contribute to deforestation and where estates and farmers are resilient to climate change.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Find and develop project ideas focused on environmental sustainability for ETP’s in-country programs.
  • Lead the environmental and climate technical support for creating proposals to secure funding from foundations, institutions, and other donors.
  • Use and integrate the newest tools and methods to ensure all programs consider climate and environmental needs, priorities, and challenges.
  • Work with the Private Sector and Innovation Lead to find and promote environmentally sustainable business innovations and successful models from other sectors.
  • Explore and collaborate with the Private Sector and Innovation Lead to identify opportunities within ETPs new membership criteria to drive the organisation’s environmental objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with NGOs, government agencies, and businesses to promote collaboration on environmental and climate issues.
  • Lead the organisation's environmental strategy, review it when needed, and use insights to improve future environmental and climate actions.
  • Collaborate with the team to create and update the organisation’s evidence-based policy positions and factsheets on environmental issues in the tea industry.
  • Create case studies and other materials to showcase the organisation’s environmental efforts and impact.

About you:

  • Have the right to work in the UK and reside within a commutable distance of our London office in Bethnal Green.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Environment and Climate programming and policy, preferably within the agricultural or development sectors.
  • Experience in developing sustainability plans for the private sector (net zero policies, carbon footprinting).
  • Technical knowledge of the impact of climate change on global supply chains.
  • Working knowledge of how livelihoods and gender impact environment and climate programming.
  • Advanced studies or equivalent experience in International Development, Value Chain Development & Market Systems, Agriculture, Responsible Business Practices or other relevant fields; participatory methodologies that promote learning and social change; participatory research and evaluation designs.

About the organisation:

The employer is a global membership organisation catalysing long-term, systemic change, to benefit everybody who works in tea – especially people in tea-producing regions.

The organisation is made up of a small, but dedicated, expert team across most tea-growing regions, including Africa and Asia, as well as a London-based secretariat.

You may also have experience in areas such as: Environmental, Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Manager, Environmental Sustainability Manager, Environmental Lead, Environmental Sustainability Lead, Climate Change Lead.
