Are you ready to make a real impact on how people move around Surrey? As a Transport Planner and Modeller, you'll play a key role in shaping the places where people live, work, and travel – helping to grow the local economy and protect the environment. This is a fascinating and rewarding role at the heart of a sector that’s constantly evolving. You'll use tools like big data, GIS, and transport models to provide clear, evidence‑based insights that inform decision‑making and drive positive change. You’ll be joining our Transport Studies team, working closely with colleagues across the organisation – from Transport Policy to Design, Construction and Maintenance. It’s a collaborative environment where your ideas will be valued from day one.

Responsibilities
  • Extracting and processing transport and movement‑related data to support analysis and interpretation, including the use of GIS techniques.
  • Preparing data for use in assessment tools, junction models and microsimulation models.
  • Code representations of road and public transport networks for use in strategic and other transport models.
  • Undertaking model calibration and validation to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Conducting modelling tasks and quality‑checking models developed by others.
  • Supporting the interpretation of modelling outputs and contributing to the preparation of technical reports.
  • Applying a range of assessment tools, such as the Active Travel Appraisal Toolkit and accessibility analysis tools.
  • Participating in training across key areas including transport appraisal and analysis, transport economics, data collection, monitoring and evaluation, road safety, highway design and industry best practices.

Qualifications
  • Achievement of A levels (or equivalent alternative).
  • Strong IT skills, including spreadsheets.

  • Confidence working both independently (e.g. from home) and collaboratively in an office environment.

This role has a starting salary of £33,552 per annum, based on a 36‑hour working week. Your salary will increase as you progress through the Professional Development Programme.

We are excited to be hiring a new Transport Planner and Modeller to join our fantastic Transport Studies team. The team is based in our Woking office, Victoria Gate, which is conveniently close to the railway station. This role is open to hybrid and flexible working. As a team we split our time between collaborating with colleagues in the office for at least one day per week and working from home or alternative locations the rest. This is a Professional Development Programme (PDP) position and provides a formal career development opportunity, supported by a comprehensive training and development offer. The PDP is an ideal way to kick‑start your career in transport planning and modelling, and will provide you with a structured framework to learn and to progress through the pay grades to match your growing depth of experience and knowledge.
