£24,000 a year + fantastic benefits

Full time – 37.5hrs a week (Shifts are Monday to Sunday. Variety of shift patterns between the hours of 7am to 9pm. On call hours given as overtime)

You will be required to respond to all requests for Theatre Portering services, operate systems and maintain accurate logs and reports. You’ll follow processes and procedures and generally assuring the safety and welfare of all staff, patients and visitors. You will act and interact with patients, consultants, staff and visitors in a way that will create an experience in accordance with Cromwell Hospital’s Service Vision “Every Patient is a VIP”.

You’ll help us make health happen by contributing to the following key tasks

  • Deliver a high standard of patient care and ensure safety within the operating theatre environment.
  • Always maintain a professional and courteous manner, offering support to other departments as needed.
  • Complete manual handling training to safely assist clinical teams with the transportation and handling of equipment and materials.
  • Provide support in positioning and transferring patients within the theatre, following successful completion of the required training and risk assessment.
  • Undertake duties in accordance with Theatre Department’s policies and procedures.
  • Recognise and respond in an appropriate and proportionate manner to any situation which has the potential to threaten the safety or security or well-being of the hospital, its patients, visitors and staff.
  • Maintain effective logs and records of activity. Promote, support and encourage the seamless flow of information both to and from the Theatre portering team and the hospital at large so as to be able to anticipate, rather than be react to, changing circumstances within the hospital.
  • Ensure you present yourself for duty in a timely manner and are dressed and equipped so as to maintain and display at all times the highest professional standards.
  • To escort patients to and from the Theatre department and their rooms and to and from any of the hospital’s departments.
  • To perform the change of all medical gases as and when required and store empty cylinders in the appropriate area and enter into the cylinder log such changes.
  • Observe and report visitor and patient movement and access to restricted parts of the Hospital.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety and Environmental safety requirements.
  • Maintain the condition and ensure the suitability and integrity of all equipment employed within the department. This includes Wheelchairs and Trolleys.
  • Carry out regular inspections of emergency as well as other equipment used in the department. This includes wheelchairs and Theatre portering equipment within the hospital as well as first aid equipment within Theatres, so as to ensure its readiness at all times for use in the event of an emergency and or patient requirement.

Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role:

  • Previous experience as a porter in a healthcare setting, ideally within a theatre environment
  • Physical capability to lift and move heavy items when required
  • Clear and effective spoken English communication skills
  • Basic information and technology skills
  • Good telephone manner
  • Understanding of Health and Safety protocols and procedures
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Good timekeeping
  • Able to empathise with patients and demonstrate genuine care
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
