Job description
Overview

We are recruiting an enthusiastic and skilled HCPC registered podiatrist to join the Podiatry department in South Tees. The post involves delivering high quality, evidence based care in both in-patient and out-patient settings within a multidisciplinary diabetes team. The Diabetes Foot MDT at The James Cook University Hospital aims to provide the highest quality diabetes foot care in the North East. The post includes managing a own caseload for high-risk patients and enabling rapid access for urgent problems (within one working day).

You must have access to a vehicle for work purposes to meet the requirements of the role.

Main duties

You will provide day-to-day clinical care in a supported environment and within a dynamic team. The role involves:

  • Responsibility for patient care including monitoring, diagnosis and investigations of high-risk patients, including wound care
  • Producing individual treatment plans and podiatry interventions for patients who may require diagnosis and onward referral

The post holder will work as part of the established Diabetes Foot MDT and extended teams, providing a flexible, fast access service for patients with urgent diabetes foot problems. The post holder will refer to medical and nursing staff, X-ray and orthopaedic, orthotic and vascular teams as indicated. Highly developed clinical skills, excellent communication and leadership qualities are required.

The post holder will assess, diagnose, develop and implement individualized care programmes for patients with diabetes and diabetes-related problems such as acute or chronic neuropathies, vascular problems, foot ulcerations, gangrene and Charcot foot. The post holder will manage their own caseload, provide regular podiatry care for those at high risk of diabetic foot ulceration, and enable rapid access for urgent referrals. The post holder will interpret X-ray and tissue samples and arrange appropriate antibiotics and offloading as required.

Qualifications & Training

  • Completion of the diabetic foot module or equivalent (or working towards / willing to complete)

  • Masters level prescribing qualification

  • High quality clinical skills, including precision, dexterity and concentration

  • Sound knowledge of diabetes in general, including etiologies, treatments and systemic pathologies
  • Skills in neurovascular testing and use of offloading devices (including half shoes, cast sandals, aircast boots and PRAFOs)

Desirable

  • Experience in casting the diabetic foot
