Job description

Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner

The closing date is 14 January 2026

The Safeguarding Families Together team (SFT) are looking for an experienced PWP to join both the Weymouth and Portland and Dorchester and West Teams for this fixed term/secondment opportunity.

The SFT Families Together Team aims to keep the highest risk children, and families, in Dorset together safely and to improve health and educational outcomes for the children. We work in a multidisciplinary team to reduce physical and emotional harm in families. You will be working with social care practitioners and adult specialists to work with parents in relation to domestic abuse, mental health and substance misuse. You will regularly attend group supervision in addition to your own personal supervision to support the families in an MDT approach.

You will be fully trained to use motivational interviewing in addition to your PWP core skills. This is a key technique which is designed to empower and engage parents to make positive changes needed to improve their own wellbeing.

The Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner post is a fixed term/secondment role. For those with current NHS service, the role will be offered on a secondment basis only. Please obtain permission to be released on a secondment before submitting an application.

You must hold a PWP qualification to apply.

Main duties of the job

The SFT Teams will include a range of specialists who will work alongside our Social Workers and Child and Family Workers. As a PWP in the team you will be:

  • Engaging with parents open to SFT team.
  • Conducting PWP Assessments.
  • Use Motivational interviewing skills to maintain engagement.
  • Utilise Step GSH step 2 techniques where appropriate.
  • Attend group-based MDT supervision on top of your own ccms supervision.
  • Reduced Caseload & Less Paperwork

The SFT model is based on delivering intervention and support. It means social workers and adult professionals can focus on doing what they are trained to do. By having professionals from different disciplines working under one roof, our teams are able to work closely together, minimising time spent on making referrals to other agencies for support.

The responsibility for a family is shared among a team of professionals, reducing the risk placed on any one individual. Instead, social workers, Child and Family Workers, domestic abuse practitioners & officers, recovery workers and mental health practitioners all work closely together to support families and keep children safe. All workers participate in group supervision and contribute to analysis and decision making.

Applications from candidates that require current Healthcare worker sponsorship to work in the UK are unfortunately ineligible to apply for this position.
