Overview

Join a team of 80+ skilled professionals at Manchester Train Care Centre, working on a major overhaul project for the Class 390 Avanti High Speed Trains. Purpose of the Role

As Production Manager, you will play a pivotal role in delivering the overhaul programme by:

  • Meeting production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Managing resources effectively to ensure trains are delivered on time, in full working order, and to the highest standards.
  • Leading, motivating, and developing a skilled workforce to achieve business plan objectives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Management
    • Manage and oversee the production team across all areas of the overhaul project.
    • Monitor and control production on a shift-by-shift basis, ensuring accountability is clearly defined.
    • Lead organisational change to optimise working practices, enhance productivity, and maintain workforce discipline.
    • Promote a positive culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Production & Delivery
    • Ensure all production meets safety, quality, and compliance standards (internal, customer, Network Rail).
    • Review and implement daily work plans to meet production targets efficiently.
    • Proactively identify and resolve issues from incident reports, customer feedback, and operational challenges.
    • Ensure accurate use of IT systems (SAP, Maximo, Web Gemini) for planning, tracking, and reporting.
  • Quality, Safety & Compliance
    • Uphold the client\'s EHS policy, ensuring all team members work safely and responsibly.
    • Enforce compliance with H&S at Work Act, Railway Group Standards, and local policies.
    • Oversee inspections, in-process checks, and final quality sign-off.
    • Support Lean, 5S, and Kaizen initiatives to drive operational excellence.
  • People Development
    • Define staffing requirements, plan rosters, and manage attendance and leave allocations.
    • Conduct appraisals, identify training needs, and encourage professional development.
    • Address performance or disciplinary issues in line with company policies.
  • Performance Measurement
    • On-Time Delivery of trains and clearance of defects.
    • Work order close-out in real time.
    • Reduction of repeat quality issues ("Own Goals").
    • Customer satisfaction and positive feedback.
    • Delivery of individual and team performance objectives.
Experience Needed

Prior experience in Production Management is essential. Experience in the following backgrounds is desirable: rolling stock (locomotives or rail vehicles) preferred; Military (REME or other Military Engineering), Aerospace, Automotive vehicles such as HGVs, Buses, Lorries, Electric Vehicles, Automobiles.
