Job summary

A prominent engineering services provider is seeking a Band 4 Mechanical Shift Engineer to join a team in Lancashire. The role involves carrying out reactive and planned maintenance across critical mechanical systems within a hospital setting. Ideal candidates will have City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering among other qualifications, as well as at least two years of experience working in the NHS. Mechanical Engineer
Band 4
£16.18 Umbrella
3‑6 month contract


We are currently seeking a Band 4 Mechanical Shift Engineer to join a team within a hospital environment in Lancashire.


This constitutes a blend of planned preventative maintenance coupled with emergency repairs and everything in between.


You will demonstrate a good working knowledge of critical mechanical infrastructure ranging from steam raising plant, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to Medical Gas and building management systems in compliance with all statutory requirements and good practice guidelines.


Job responsibilities


  • Carry out reactive and planned preventative maintenance along with inspection and testing of complex systems including Steam raising plant (Shell Boilers), condensate & distribution pipework, MTHW, LTHW, HTG and DHWS systems, pressure systems, unvented and vented hot water systems, chilled water systems, medical gas systems. ventilation & air conditioning systems, compressed air systems, building management systems, catering equipment and other fixed hospital systems in line with statutory requirements and Trust procedures.

  • Maintain stock levels for spares and equipment.

  • Refer to and understand Engineering/Technical drawings, specifications and technical manuals.

  • Be prepared to work in hazardous areas, confined spaces and on contaminated equipment taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment in accordance with Trust policy and safe working procedures.


Qualifications & Education


  • City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering Services

  • Relevant credited technical qualification

  • Attained a technical qualification in a specialist area


Desirable


  • Hold a current Standard DBS on the updated service


Knowledge & Experience

Essential


  • Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedure

  • Evidence of continued training across traditional trade groups

  • Completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship which consists of a time‑served site experience element and relevant practical engineering tasks.

  • Be able to work unsupervised/organise workloads and demonstrate an ability to manage priorities under pressure and make decisions.

  • Demonstrate a minimum two years previous experience within the NHS


Desirable


  • Previous experience of working in large complex building service role (non‑domestic)

  • Previous experience of how to work with detailed technical and HSE compliance related procedure
