Job description

The role of the Health Promotion Outreach Worker is to conduct health promotion activities for the NHS bowel cancer screening programme across City & Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. The candidate will work to raise awareness, identify and reduce barriers in order to improve the uptake of bowel cancer screening across the participating London Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). The post holder will work in close relationship with the Health Improvement Specialist to develop and carry out a coordinated programme with Primary Care staff and Community Organisations. The overall aim is to improve uptake and coverage to a minimum national standard. A key role is to raise awareness of the bowel screening programme with Local GPs, public health teams, community groups, councils and the general population in the localities the Bowel Cancer Screening Centre (BCSC) serves.

  • To deliver a programme of evidence-based health promotion activities with Primary Care and Community Groups which will seek to reduce the barriers to bowel cancer screening across the CCG\'s
  • To conduct health promotion activities in accordance with the BCSC Health Promotion Strategy
  • To assist in needs assessments to inform professionals on the requirements of particular communities on issues around bowel cancer and screening
  • To integrate the issues of bowel cancer and its prevention within a wider health programme in primary care & community settings
  • To assist in the creation and provision of appropriate health information to take account of language and literacy and ensure availability when required
  • To work with individuals using behaviour change/motivational interviewing techniques
  • To contribute to the evidence base for increasing access to bowel cancer screening
  • To develop health champions for eligible population to increase the acceptability of screening
  • To support with administrative tasks and to ensure all outreach activities are accurately recorded on the BCSC Health Promotion Monitoring system, which will inform service review and development to reduce barriers to screening uptake in diverse communities
  • To ensure that the issues of health inequalities, health inequity and vulnerable individuals and communities are understood and addressed in health promotion interventions
  • To maximise the use of professional supervision to ensure targets are effectively met

You will need to be an approachable, flexible and committed individual who enjoys developing creative solutions, as well as being an exceptional communicator with the ability to work positively and collaboratively. A good understanding of the North East London area is desirable.
