As Consultant Nurse, you will provide clinical and professional leadership to enable the delivery of the Trust Medicines Optimisation strategy and work effectively across all four pillars of consultant practice (expert clinical practice, leadership, education and research). The post holder will be an autonomous clinical practitioner leading on the provision of expert practice in medicines optimisation ensuring better value and improved patient outcomes. The post holder will lead on developing and delivering multi-disciplinary advanced clinical practice and research, prescribing competence, quality, and safety supporting multiple professional disciplines across the organisation. In conjunction with the Trust Medicines Safety officer, you will lead on embedding the principles of medicines safety and medicines optimisation into clinical practice and contribute to policy developments to support safe practice.
MPFT Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation Directorate are looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Clinical Leader.
Role and responsibilities
- As a senior member of the clinical team, you will represent the Trust and participate in relevant local, regional and national sector wide forums related to non-medical prescribing and medicines optimisation.
- Provide expert advice, clinical supervision and training to the non-medical prescribing workforce and partner organisations.
- Contribute to research and development projects within the service.
- Deliver clinical care and lead on medicines optimisation initiatives at a Trust wide level; develop and embed a programme of advanced clinical practice and training for the non-medical prescribing workforce and wider nursing workforce.
- Lead on developing and monitoring evidence-based practice in medicines optimisation and quality and safety initiatives.
- Establish and maintain audit and quality improvement programmes to assess nursing clinical and administration practices across the Trust.
- Develop proactive relationships with professional leads and staff across care groups, communicating information about safe, evidence-based, cost-effective medicines practices.
- Support patient safety events related to medicines management in line with relevant frameworks and competency assessments.
- Provide analysis of prescribing data with recommendations to optimise cost-effective use of medicines.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of digital medicines systems (e-Prescribing/EPMA) and other medicines digital programmes.
- Establish standards, guidelines and protocols to advance nursing and multiprofessional practice in medicines management.
- Work with the Trust Pharmacy team to develop and deliver a training programme to ensure high standards of medicines management.
- Collaborate with Higher Education Institutions and Trust Partners on Non-Medical Prescribing curriculum development and delivery.
- Raise the profile of medicines within nursing leadership and operational groups and address associated risks.
- Develop and maintain a robust assurance framework evidencing compliance with the Medicines Code and translating into practice across clinical delivery systems.
- Ensure risk assessments and risk management plans are carried out in line with policy and procedure.
- Support serious incident reviews and medication incidents, informing changes in practice and working with nursing and operational leadership.
- Review medicines incident trends with the Trust Medication Safety Officer and support improvement plans as needed.
- Support services to assist service users in safe selfadministration of prescribed medicines where appropriate.
- Provide quarterly assurance reports to the Medicines Optimisation Committee and Nursing Director on issues relevant to the CQC Core Standard in relation to Medicines Optimisation.

Qualifications and experience
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration according to the field of practice
- Masters level qualification (Level 7) in advanced clinical practice or equivalent
Experience
- Significant and in-depth post qualifying clinical experience
- Evidence of working effectively at a senior level in a multi-disciplinary health and social care setting
Skills
- Provide leadership by setting a clear direction in service planning and leading discussions on the requirements to meet a safe, innovative, modern and high-quality service
- Knowledge of various approaches to physical/mental health assessment
