Job description
Overview

1. 8.75 PA consultant nephrologist post supports clinical and academic programme in chronic kidney disease, community-based care, renal transplantation and dialysis across North Central London. Provide inpatient and outpatient care at Royal Free Hospital, Tottenham Kidney & Dialysis Centre and St Pancras Kidney Care Centre, with a 1:9 nephrology on‑call commitment.

Key responsibilities
  • Coordinate and perform kidney biopsies on an alternate‑week list, including pre‑procedure planning.
  • Provide post‑transplant care and haemodialysis management.
  • Lead the Trust’s expanding home haemodialysis programme.
  • Deliver virtual CKD triage and online advice via e‑Referral portal.
  • Participate in CPD and department training; joint educational lead, supervising specialty trainees, clinical scientists, junior doctors and medical students.
  • Conduct routine weekly clinics, monthly multi‑disciplinary team meetings, and MDT reviews of a dialysis cohort of 50–60 patients and a transplant cohort.
  • Engage in infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Support improvements in dialysis access pathways and attend weekly X‑ray, renal pathology and academic meetings.
  • Participate in undergraduate teaching, policy review and annual appraisal/revalidation processes.
  • Work on a 1:9 on‑call rota, including morning handover, daily ward rounds for ~30 renal inpatients, discharge planning and new admission reviews; weekend work and out‑of‑hours advice; routine clinics are cancelled during on‑call weeks.
Job plan & time allocation

Broad activity schedule – approx. 8.75 PAs per week:

  • Virtual CKD triage (DCC) – 0.5 PAs per week.
  • On‑call (DCC) – 1.75 PAs per week.
  • Transplant cohort (THKDC) – 1.5 PAs per week.
  • Dialysis cohort (SPKCC) – 1.5 PAs per week.
  • Home haemodialysis lead (SPKCC) – 0.25 PAs per week.
  • Biopsy coordination and planning (DCC) – 0.25 PAs per week.
  • Biopsy list (Royal Free, alternate weeks) – 0.5 PAs per week.
  • Departmental/academic meeting (SPA, Royal Free) – 0.5 PAs per week.
  • X‑ray/biopsy meeting (DCC, Royal Free) – 0.5 PAs per week.
  • Continuing professional development (SPA, Royal Free) – 1 PA per week.
  • Joint department training and education lead (SPA, Royal Free) – 0.5 PAs per week.
