Job description

Join us today to become a Conservator Volunteer and be part of the team keeping history alive by preserving our waterways. In this role, you’ll help improve and maintain our beautiful orchard at Tibberton. Whether working on pre-planned maintenance, cutting back vegetation, or helping prepare for events, our Conservators do a fantastic job of ensuring there’s plenty of beauty on the doorstep. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community while learning more about the canals in your area.

Why we want you

Our Conservator volunteers help maintain our network, carrying out heritage and nature conservation activities, as well as everyday tasks like painting or litter picking to improve the local environment.

They tackle some of our toughest issues on the waterways, ensuring as much of the canal as possible is accessible and well maintained. Each year, we face new challenges in managing our increasingly popular space, and your support will help us achieve our goals of keeping canals alive.

While we have regular teams for important tasks, some projects are on a ‘project’ basis, such as rebuilding a stone wall or planting, allowing different people to contribute in various ways.

What you will be doing

  • Day-to-day maintenance
  • Heritage restoration
  • Graffiti removal
  • Environmental enhancements such as hedgelaying
  • Creating new access points with improved steps or ramps
  • When registering as a volunteer, we will ask about any unspent convictions to declare and assess risk accordingly.

The skills you need

  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to travel to remote locations
