Job description
Overview

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We keep the cloud running and support all AWS data centers, servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment to ensure continual access to innovation. We work on challenging problems with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain and are looking for talented people to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You will collaborate with AWS teams to deliver high safety and security standards while providing scalable capacity at the lowest possible cost. We foster an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Role and Responsibilities
  • As Chief Engineer, ensure that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency. This includes planned preventive maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. Serve as a focal point for all facility operations and support Amazon within owned and operated data centers.
  • Manage large-scale, high-impact projects and new region support from conception to completion; collaborate with engineering, automation, procurement, finance, and external support groups in local and global settings.
  • Create and deliver on key milestones, obtain and track quotes for all necessary costs, and document project results for future implementation at other facilities. Drive innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs.
  • Train and support the Engineering team in electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations; implement and execute site- or equipment-specific training exercises (e.g., stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers).
  • Oversee day-to-day operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data center sites; operate independently with limited direct management.
  • Assist in the design and build-out of new facilities and perform root-cause analysis of equipment failures; act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center region. Overtime hours may be required to support site stability.
  • Troubleshoot and report facility and data center events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA); create and deploy standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendors and AWS staff; respond to off-hour emergency calls and assist with investigation, mitigation, and recovery.
  • Meet physical requirements with reasonable accommodations (e.g., ability to lift up to 40 lbs, work in elevated locations); perform tasks in a 24/7 environment with after-hours support as needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Work at height, from ladders; perform physical tasks during shifts.
  • Work in a noisy environment with ear protection.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent (country-specific amendments may apply).
  • Extensive industry experience with UPS, backup generator systems, and generic mechanical-room infrastructure.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS7671 18th Edition; High/Low Voltage Authorized Person (AP) experience.
  • Previous experience in operations and on-call support for data center facilities or mission-critical plants.
  • Fundamental knowledge of network design and layout, and low-voltage cabling (copper/fiber).
