Job Summary

The post-holder will deliver, develop and support clinical pharmacy services in a variety of specialties within the pharmacy department on a rotational basis. In accordance with priorities agreed by the lead pharmacist for the specialist area and the clinical site lead pharmacist, the post holder at the Royal Free Hospital will cover areas including Patient Services, Clinical Services/E+T, Surgery, ITU, Medicine and paediatrics/neonates, with the aim of enhancing knowledge and skills and allowing progression towards a more senior role.

There are opportunities to work in specific clinical specialties depending on the site. You will have exposure to directorate work such as DTC evaluations, high‑cost drug reviews and audits. Clinical commitment is expected during all rotations.

In summary, the post-holder will be expected to:

  • Work as a clinical pharmacist, ensuring the safe, clinically and cost‑efficient use of medicines.
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care.
  • Participate in drug‑usage reviews, audits and cost‑efficiency programmes.
  • Line‑manage and support more junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the team.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver a high‑quality pharmacy service, including drug supply, review of highly complex medication regimens, medicine reconciliation and discharge planning.
  • Actively participate on consultant rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Make evidence‑based decisions, in partnership with patients and professionals within specialties to improve outcomes.
  • Identify risks of medicines use within the specialties and assist in implementing strategies to minimise them.
  • Ensure compliance with local and national policies, including medicines policy and NICE guidelines.
  • Participate in specialist pharmacy clinics in certain clinical areas.
  • Be expected to participate in out‑of‑hours, weekend and bank holiday service, including responsibility for the securing of the department. The on‑call pharmacist is solely responsible for providing a pharmacy service to the hospital outside of working hours.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
  • Essential Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council; M Pharm or equivalent; commencement of postgraduate at Certificate level in clinical pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Desirable Non‑medical prescriber; postgraduate qualification at certificate level in clinical pharmacy or satisfactory evidence of equivalence.
Skills & Abilities
  • Essential Ability to work methodically under pressure; effective verbal and written communication skills with all disciplines, colleagues and patients; ability to deal sympathetically and courteously with patients and members of the public; ability to work alone or in a team; ability to prioritise own work and manage work with junior staff; effective organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • Desirable Implementation of findings from clinical and practice‑based research; proven time‑management skills.
Experience
  • Essential Demonstrable experience working in hospital pharmacy; comprehensive Band 6 rotation; broad‑based clinical experience; evidence of clinical audit or practice research; ability to demonstrate appropriate clinical knowledge and application.
  • Desirable Experience in training and development of junior staff; experience of managing others.

  • Essential Able to participate in out‑of‑hours service; interest in development of others; interest in expanding knowledge and self‑development.
