Job summary

An NHS Trust in London is seeking an Assistant Psychologist to provide structured assessments and treatments. This opportunity is aimed at psychology graduates from under-represented groups to gain valuable experience. Candidates must have a 2:2 or higher degree, no prior Assistant Psychologist experience, and evidence of barriers to entering the profession. The role includes collaborating on service evaluation and supporting trainee psychologists. Closing date for applications is December 8, 2025.

We are committed to the NHSE’s plans to improve equity of access for those aspiring to pursue a career in Psychology. The ASPIRE programme is intended to give work experience to those who otherwise would be excluded from entering the profession via an unpaid route. In line with widening access principles, we are looking to recruit two psychology graduates from under-represented groups within the Psychological Professions. We have paid (Band 4) work experience opportunities to join us in ELFT (London) to help you gain valuable experience. (For this reason, you donotneed to be working in a clinical role to apply).

Eligibility

In line with the Aspiring Psychologist - Widening Access Scheme, these posts are specifically targeted at recruiting candidates whom have been disadvantaged in entering the profession. Therefore, you are welcome and encouraged to apply if you:

  • Have a psychology undergraduate degree (2:2 OR above)OR have completed a Masters conversion course if your initial degree was not in psychologyAND
  • You have NOTcompleted a Masters degree or post‑graduate diploma after your undergraduate degreeAND
  • NOThad prior experience (paid or unpaid) as an Assistant Psychologist, PWP, High Intensity Therapist or similarAND
  • You have NOTpreviously been employed under this or a similar schemeAND
  • To be able to evidence you have lived experience associated with health, social, class, race, ethnicity, disability or economic inequalities that has acted as a barrier to ‘getting onto the ladder’ within the psychological professions.

Responsibilities

Assistant Psychologists provide structured assessments and manualised treatments (individual and group) under the supervision of a qualified Psychologist. The successful candidate will also support the work of psychological therapies in services by involvement in file/case review, audit, and service evaluation and/or research for the improvement of services. The post holder may support trainee clinical psychologists in their placement work, both directly through assisting in clinical areas, and indirectly through collection of placement data with oversight and direction from the Psychology Workforce Development Lead. The post holder would be expected to work closely from a co‑production and collaborative stance with experts-by‑experience and local communities. Further specific duties will be determined on the basis of skills and experience and operational service requirements, and may vary according to service needs/priorities change.
