Position Overview

This position is accountable for conducting a continuing program of traffic control planning and inspection to ensure maximum safety and convenience where construction, maintenance, or utility work is being performed under traffic.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct visual inspections, both day and night, of traffic control devices in construction and maintenance areas to ensure they are properly installed and operating.
  • Review and revise, as necessary, all traffic control plans for projects of 5 days or more duration to ensure they comply with applicable standards.
  • Provide input for preconstruction meetings and approve traffic control plans so that all parties understand their responsibilities for proper traffic control.
  • Ensure that temporary traffic control devices meet standards or approve plans for those where no standard is applicable.
  • Perform training for district field staff to ensure thorough understanding of traffic control standards and practices outlined in the Traffic Control Field Manual.
  • Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and in a manner conducive to fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum plus five years of engineering experience; or seven years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to perform job duties independently and with minimal guidance / supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Coursework in public speaking and/or experience as an instructor.
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid driver's license.
  • 24-hour emergency call availability.
  • Districtwide travel.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Certain provisions of revolving door restrictions (5 ILCS 430/5-45) apply; if offered non-State employment during State employment or within one year after ending State employment, notification to OEIG may be required and failure to notify may incur a fine.
