The successful candidate will be based in the Galhecos team of the astronomical Observatory of Strasbourg (Observatoire astronomique de Strasbourg, ObAS). The ObAS is a mixed research unit of the CNRS and of the University of Strasbourg. It is located on the premises of the University, one of the top universities in France, in beautiful historical buildings surrounded by a botanic garden, within walking distance from the city center and with easy access to the University canteen. ObAS is also an Observatory (OSU) providing unique services to the national and international astronomical community. The CNRS is a multidisciplinary public research organization placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It is one of the most important public institutions in the world, with 33000 employees including more than 16000 researchers and more than 16000 engineers and technicians. ObAS currently hosts about 100 people, among which 32 permanent researchers and 15 PhD students. ObAS also has access to a wide range of observational and computational facilities. The Galhecos team is a dynamic and growing team, particularly on topics related to the dynamics of galaxies and stellar systems. The working hours will not involve any particular constraints and will be identical to those of the other researchers at the Observatory.

The PhD thesis concerns the analytical and numerical modeling of galactic bars. The candidate will compare the results of numerical simulations (ideliazed and in a cosmological context) with analytical models that they will develop, in order to understand the detailed physics of bar formation and evolution in the context of the missing bar problem of current cosmological models.
