An international research organization seeks a Research Officer – Epidemiology to manage lab and field activities for livestock disease projects in Kenya. Overview

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research officer – Epidemiology One Health to manage both lab and field activities for Sero prevalence, Risk Factors for Exposure and Socio-Economic Impact of Livestock Diseases in Kenya project.

ILRI works to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 11 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, ILRI has regional or country offices and projects in East, South, and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern, and West Africa.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design, development, and implementation of a national sero-prevalence and risk factor survey on six diseases namely: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), Sheep and Goat Pox (SGP), Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Lumpy skin disease (LSD) and Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in cattle, sheep and / or goats in Kenya
  • Take lead in conducting a desk review on the six diseases named above and prepare a report.
  • Prepare research ethics applications, data sharing agreements, and progress reports.
  • Represent ILRI on a day-to-day level with project partners and take responsibility for maintaining good relations with study participants, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
  • Support analysis of samples and build capacity among junior laboratory technicians.
  • Liaise regularly with government officials.
  • Disseminate research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Be willing to spend long days in the field.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in data analysis in field-based projects.
  • Proficiency with appropriate analytic software and tools, especially R.
  • Excellent organizational, analytic, and interpretive skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills, especially to diverse audiences and targets.
  • Post location: This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya
  • This position is at job level HG 13 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 10-month fixed term contract.
