Formación

As Legal Counsel for Iberia within AXA XL, you will handle daily legal requests from local management (especially Country Management and Underwriting Teams) and colleagues abroad involved in business opportunities in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America reinsurance markets (e.g., freedom of services in the EEA, licensing, policy design, product development, distribution, reinsurance agreements, outsourcing, and legal compliance).

You will be part of the Spanish branch's Extended Management Team, collaborating with internal stakeholders including the APAC Europe Business Unit and other functions. You will lead and develop the local legal team, ensuring effective and timely legal advice to the business.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting Country Management in governance, compliance, and internal controls to meet business and regulatory standards, including participation in management committees.
  2. Organizing and delivering local legal training sessions.
  3. Reviewing marketing, commercial materials, and press releases.
  4. Liaising with authorities and industry associations, managing filings.
  5. Overseeing local non-claims litigation and reporting to the APAC Europe General Counsel.
  6. Providing wording support and legal advice across lines of business, including drafting pre-binding guidance and post-binding reviews.
  7. Approving commercial contracts and collaborating with Procurement.
  8. Monitoring legal, compliance, and regulatory developments relevant to insurance and distribution laws.
  9. Supporting XLICSE compliance and regulatory topics, including inspections, training, and implementation of supervisory requirements.
  10. Preparing monthly reports for the branch.
  11. Managing external legal counsel activities.
  12. Supporting AXA XL / Group projects with internal departments.
  13. Leading and developing a legal associate.
  14. Engaging with key stakeholders in Spain and internal teams.

You will report to the Head of Legal France & Southern Europe and have a dotted line to the Country Manager Iberia.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Master’s degree in Law; being a qualified lawyer is a plus.
  • Experience in Legal & Compliance within the insurance sector (in-house or law firms).
  • Specialization in insurance and reinsurance law, including litigation, compliance, commercial, and civil law.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish; Portuguese is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, commercial acumen, and ability to explain complex issues clearly.
  • Problem-solving skills and decision-making ability.
  • People management experience is highly valued.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Team-oriented, with integrity, resilience, flexibility, and strong communication skills.
