LOOKOUT, Arizona’s only nonprofit newsroom focused on LGBTQ+ accountability journalism, is seeking an experienced reporter driven to uncover stories often left untold. The ideal candidate believes in journalism’s power to expose wrongdoing and spark institutional change through records requests, deep source-building, community trust, and strong policy reporting across beats, from politics to criminal justice.

The newsletter editor/reporter will be the primary voice of Eyes on the State, a weekly newsletter published during the legislative session (February–May). This role requires identifying policy stories inside the Capitol that other outlets miss and contributing to biweekly reporting that helps readers understand how state politics shape daily life in Arizona. Outside the session, the reporter will maintain a steady cadence of enterprise, feature, and project‑based stories.

This position is best suited for a highly independent, self‑starting reporter with medium to advanced research skills and a track record of impactful reporting. The reporter should think beyond traditional LGBTQ+ framing, investigating how government and private power affect queer communities and holding institutions—both inside and outside the community—accountable. You do not need to be queer to apply, but you must be able to build trust and report fairly while upholding journalistic standards. Experience reporting in Arizona is preferred, but not required.

Salary: $55,000–$65,000

Produce and curate content for Eyes on the State, a weekly newsletter during the legislative session that helps readers navigate Arizona politics and LGBTQ+ issues. Write engaging headlines, summaries, and visuals to inform and grow the audience.

Report on a wide range of LGBTQ+ issues, including civil rights, health care, public safety, education, and local, statewide, and regional politics. Conduct in‑depth interviews with community members, activists, and leaders across Arizona.

Identify and pitch underreported stories that reflect the diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences in the region. Manage multiple stories at various stages, from publishing quick‑turn stories, enterprise reporting, and projects, with biweekly deadlines outside the newsletter. Uphold the highest of journalistic ethics, accuracy, and transparency.

This job involves significant collaboration across various news outlets, and requires someone to work closely with editors and fellow reporters to ensure comprehensive coverage and contribute to multimedia storytelling, including video, podcasts, and interactives.

Use our newsletters to foster reader engagement and amplify LGBTQ+ voices. Build relationships within Arizona’s various LGBTQ+ communities and attend relevant events and meetings.

Manage deadlines independently and adapt quickly to breaking news.
