GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the world’s leading particle accelerators for cutting‑edge research.

The new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world’s largest research projects, is currently being built in international cooperation.

The Materials Research Department is seeking a highly motivated outstanding PhD candidate with qualifications in materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related field. The research will be conducted within the DINERWA project in cooperation with several German and European partners. The candidate will work on the synthesis of advanced alloys by electrodeposition and the investigation of their radiation hardness in the context of fusion research.

  • Characterization of samples (morphology, composition, and crystallinity) using a broad range of analytical methods
  • Investigation of radiation-hardness–related properties of nanostructured samples

Preparation, presentation, and publication of scientific results obtained

Your profile:

  • Above-average university degree (Master or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related subject
  • Good knowledge of electrochemical deposition and nanomaterials characterization
  • Experience working in a chemistry laboratory
  • Knowledge of ion beam physics is an advantage.
  • Strong command of English, both spoken and written
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills in an international research environment
  • Ability to work independently within a team.

Employment conditions:

The PhD position (TVöD 13, 65%) is limited to 36 months.

Salary is as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI.
