CNL’s Environment and Waste Technologies Branch is seeking a Research Technologist to support projects in our Environmental Toxicology Laboratory and contribute to various initiatives in environmental biology. What will you be doing!

  • Conducting experiments under well-defined, controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Analyzing environmental and radiological sediment, biota, and water samples.
  • Keeping accurate laboratory and field records.
  • Contributing to scientific and technical reports.
  • Performing experiments and obtaining data, as directed, without constant supervision.
  • Preparing culture water and culture substrates.
  • Analyzing of water samples for such parameters as temperature, pH, conductivity, hardness, dissolved oxygen, ammonia.
  • Collecting, processing, and radiological analyses of samples.
  • Carrying out measurements with potentially expensive and delicate instruments.
  • Maintaining quality assurance and quality control records.
  • Managing laboratory records and preparing graphs, figures, and tables.
  • Maintaining laboratory stocks and field equipment supplies; purchase order submissions.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Handling radioactive materials and being familiar with the methods and precautions required in handling radioactive substances.
  • Maintaining invertebrate and fish cultures.
  • Practicing safety, housekeeping, and leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a program of Environmental Sciences or Environmental Chemistry, or equivalent formal education plus relevant experience OR
    • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Minimum 1 year of experience working in a laboratory environment involving environmental sample collection, chemical preparations and analyses using established procedures.
    • Experience in water, sediment and biota sampling and analysis techniques would be an asset
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to conduct experiments under well-defined, controlled laboratory conditions.
    • Ability to follow procedures and willingness to learn new analytical techniques.
    • Demonstrated fine motor skills.
    • Ability to carry out environmental and radiological analyses of sediment, biota, and water samples.
    • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
    • Knowledge of and commitment to safe environmental laboratory and fieldwork practices.
    • Demonstrated skill in preparing written scientific and technical reports.
    • Physical ability to work in the laboratory and in the field.
    • Organization skills in completing field and laboratory analytical records.
    • Ability to work as part of an environmental team, as well as work independently.
    • Ability to interpret the results of experiments/tests carried out in the lab and provide recommendations to supervision and/or customers based on the results.
    • Willingness to conduct repetitive and routine work, as well as research work.
    • Accuracy and conscientiousness in recording laboratory and field notes.
    • Maintenance of invertebrate and fish cultures.
    • Reference toxicity testing, and effluent and sediment toxicity testing.
    • Laboratory aspects of environmental chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, and radiochemistry.
    • Specialized radioanalytical equipment and techniques.
    • Molecular biology experience considered an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
