How would you want to be part of a federally initiated environmental remediation project to clean up low-level radioactive waste material? If you answered yes, this may be the role for you. Our Port Hope location is looking for an Environmental Specialist to join the team. Apply today!

What will you be doing!

  • Providing daily internal communications.
  • Assisting with preparing documentation to support the preparation of each Decision Package.
  • Working closely with project teams to ensure seamless transition of information and full support of issue management.
  • Providing mentorship to junior staff.
  • Attending meetings with property owners to assist them in understanding the application of the Special Circumstances Protocol to their property.
  • Managing and interpreting environmental monitoring data for reporting purposes.
  • Collaborating with others to develop changes to work procedures using innovative approaches.
  • Executing complex and specialized technical work under the general guidance of the Lead, Special Circumstances.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • A degree from a recognized institute of environment, geography, science, or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training. OR
    • A diploma from a recognized institute of environment, geography, science, or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training.
  • Experience
    • With a degree: 5 or more years of relevant environmental management experience.
    • With a diploma: 7 years or more of relevant environmental management experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Experience working within a regulatory environment, especially implementing O.Reg. 153/04, Reg. 347, MECP Soil Standards, etc.
    • Experience directly related to risk assessments/site assessments is a strong asset.
    • Experience in data management, analysis and reporting.
    • Strong familiarity with multi-disciplinary environmental investigations, and good familiarity with construction and/or engineering project work.
      Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn and absorb and apply technical information and multiple regulations quickly and effectively.
    • The ability to work effectively, manage conflicting priorities, and maintain good working relationships with internal and external team members.
    • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills (reading/writing/oral, internal/external); decision making and/or reasoning; strategic/critical thinking skills; problem-solving ability; project management skills.
    • Strong familiarity with project schedules and the principles of risk management is preferred. A good understanding of project management processes, especially those related to scope, schedule, cost, risk, change control, and earned value, is also preferred.
    • Organizational skills to function well with a large workload and tight deadlines, as well as being adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Requirement to attend meetings at off-site locations, such as at other Port Hope Area Initiatives site offices.
  • Visits to various construction sites in Port Hope will occasionally be required to undertake site walk-downs.
  • The in-field component of this role is estimated at 10-20%.

CNL's Historic Waste Program Management Office is in Port Hope, Ontario's beautiful and historic community. Roughly 100 km east of Toronto, it is still close enough to the “Big City” without all the hassle of being in the “Big City.” As a leader in environmental remediation at nuclear and radiologically contaminated sites, CNL is implementing the Port Hope Area Initiative on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The cleanup of historic Low-Level Radioactive Waste by CNL in Port Hope and Port Granby in Ontario demonstrates Canada’s commitment to the safe, long-term storage and management of nuclear waste.
