Your opportunity

Working under general direction of the Senior Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Assistant Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) is responsible for identifying EDI issues, offering strategic advice and communications options, recommending solutions, implementing project plans, and responding to the objectives and priorities of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office, within at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The Assistant Director, EDI will act as the lead for EDI consultations and EDI project management/implementation to ensure the work of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office can be carried out efficiently and effectively within the Office and at a campus level.

This role will take a lead in equity consultations strategy and serves as a key consultant on sensitive and complex EDI matters, offering guidance and problem-solving support to faculty, staff, and students for escalated cases. Working with the Senior Director, the Assistant Director collaborates across campus to develop and implement initiatives that foster an inclusive and equitable environment, identifying various emerging trends and community needs ensuring alignment with overall campus goals. The role also supervises and mentors direct reports, guiding their work to effectively support campus-wide EDI efforts and initiatives. The incumbent will further be responsible for co-developing and implementing training materials, presentations and correspondence for the unit.

The incumbent provides direct support and back-up to the Senior Director in advancing the academic and administrative initiatives and projects that promote EDI that have cross-campus, tri-campus and community impact. The Assistant Director, EDI will coordinate communications, take lead to advance projects, undertake initiatives and daily activities within the EDI Office that require knowledge of confidential information.

The incumbent works in a complex environment that requires a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and a need to maintain absolute confidentiality. The role will continue to evolve and the individual must be willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment.

Qualifications required
Education

University degree required in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

Minimum five (5) years’ experience in an education setting in progressively senior positions; Extensive experience with the University, knowledge of university policies and procedures, and an understanding of the University’s organizational structure, including its governance. Experience advancing equity projects within a post-secondary environment or similar complex organization; in-depth experience in and a thorough understanding of complex and intersectional issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion as they relate to the student experience and the workplace. Demonstrated supervisory experience, preferably within a unionized environment. Demonstrated commitment to the principles and issues of equity and human rights, and a track record of success with these issues in a complex and diverse environment. Experience designing and delivering educational programs. Experience in mediation and group facilitation.

A thorough understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Knowledge about media (including social media), protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of the University’s mission and intersection with the broader community; Experience leading complex and multi‑stakeholder projects.

Skills

Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (must be able to set up templates and macros in Word and Excel, set up Excel spreadsheets and graphics, and prepare sophisticated PowerPoint presentations), and scheduling software; Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint an asset; Web design skills such as content management software and WordPress preferred; Familiarity with Acrobat and other Adobe software an asset.

Other

Strong research, writing, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure; familiarity with University governance, higher education sector, and public sector administration; high degree of political acuity and judgment; ability to deal with senior University Officers in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building; ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion, and tact; superior organizational skills in planning, project management and task coordination; flexibility and problem solver orientation; and strong leadership capabilities.
