Civil & Water Resources Engineering Student - September 2025

Location:

Calgary, AB, AB, CA

Company: Imperial

At Imperial, we work every day to responsibly develop Canada’s energy resources – applying technology and innovation to supply affordable, accessible and reliable energy while reducing emissions in support of a net-zero future. Imperial recognizes the important role we can play by advancing climate solutions within our operations and by providing lower life-cycle emission products to our customers. This effort is powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by a pride in what we do and what we stand for.

The success of our upstream, downstream and chemical, and corporate divisions is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies.

Imperial honours diverse backgrounds so we can be a place where people can bring their full selves to work, no matter their identity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or ability.

At Imperial, we want you to come for the position and stay for the career. As an integrated company, we are uniquely positioned to offer you a wide range of career prospects and growth opportunities through the course of your career with us. We invite you to bring your ideas and help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs.

Come be part of the Upstream Technical Department at Imperial which has more than 140 year history in Canada and a workforce of 5,500+ total employees. Our offices are located in Calgary, AB.

Are you motivated to join Imperial as a Civil & Water Resources Engineering Student? If you are passionate about safety, building positive relationships, and working within a strong team environment, then we have the role for you! We currently have an opportunity for a Water Resource Engineering student within our technical team.

The technical team supports the Kearl mine site which has been in operation since 2012, and is located roughly 70 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Oil sand ore is mined using electric and hydraulic shovels, hauled, crushed and mixed with water prior to sending the slurry through hydro transport lines for processing to our plants. Kearl is a fly in fly out operation with transportation hubs located in Edmonton and Calgary.

Kearl is one of Canada’s highest quality oil sands deposits and represents the next generation of oil sands mining. Innovative technology is at the heart of Kearl. We’ve developed innovative approaches that enhance performance and reduce cost. The site is currently operating 81 fully autonomous 797 haul trucks using Caterpillar’s minestar system, making it one of the largest autonomous fleets in the world.

What you will do

Civil & Water Resources Engineering Student

The role primarily focuses on the mid to long range (1-5yr) planning and design of surface water infrastructure to support the water management network at the Kearl oilsands site. This work can include catchment area definition using software tools (Deswik), modelling of a small watershed (HEC-HMS) to specified return period storm events, determining appropriate water routing considering business needs and regulations, and design of sumps, ditches, culverts and pumps (internal tools, industry best practices). This role is responsible for assisting with planning/designing near future infrastructure and tying it into the existing and long-term planned water management systems.

The types of questions this role would be responsible for solving are: How are we going to move/store water within future areas set for development? What infrastructure (sumps, pumps, discharge lines, etc.) do we need? Where should the water be routed to? When do we need it in place? What infrastructure do we need to keep/modify to ensure existing systems are still effective? How does water infrastructure and areas of focus tie in with other infrastructure (roads, pipelines, utilities)?

This role is primarily a planning/design role with the intent to support long range plans. Visits to site are recommended throughout the term due to this relationship. Knowledge/school focus of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, and mining operations is an asset.

The position will be dynamic and iterative, requiring problem solving skills, the ability to prioritize and frequent optimization.

It is expected that the successful candidate for this role would also support the following types of activities:

  • Work closely with various internal engineering groups
  • Manage various water related studies and review findings/recommendations with team to determine next steps (conduct internal design or provide scope to consultant)
  • Work closely with the various stakeholder from field and office - Water Resource Engineer / Hydrologist, Civil Field Engineers, Environment and Regulatory Advisors, Geotechnical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Reclamation Specialists, Mine Planning.

A successful candidate will have strong communication, collaboration and project management skills; supported by a growing understanding (and willingness to learn) of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical, and open pit mining engineering

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, other mining related engineering fields.
  • Equivalent work experiences an asset.
  • Able to work individually, as well as in a team situation, with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or Deswik is an asset
  • Experience with HEC-HMS is an asset
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Enjoys challenging dynamic work

Work Term:12 Months
