The Team

The Radio Communications team plays a vital role in keeping field staff safe by maintaining a province-wide network of radio systems for natural resource ministries, including BC Wildfire Service, BC Parks, and Conservation Officer Service. This established team is regionally based, with 10 radio shops and 20 technologists working collaboratively across BC to install, repair, and support thousands of radios and repeaters. The Role

As a Senior Radio Communications Technologist, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and repairing critical radio systems that keep field staff safe across BC’s rugged and remote landscapes. This includes servicing mountain‑top repeater sites, installing and maintaining mobile and portable radios, and managing radio frequencies and site data. Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering and 3 years of recent related experience as a technologist in the radio communications field; OR
  • A Diploma from a recognized 2‑year Electronics Technologist program (This program is accredited at the level of Engineering Technologist by the Applied Science Technologists and Technologists of British Columbia) or equivalent and 5 years of recent related experience as a technologist in the radio communications field; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered.

Related experience must include experience in:

  • Supervising and training technical and/or professional staff in the radio, wireless and data communication field.
  • Radio frequency system design which includes, VHF, UHF and RF (Radio Frequency) communications principles and practices data communications, wireless and ground‑based protocols, which include radio and wireless communications systems and components, corrective solutions for Radio Frequency intermodulation and electromagnetic interference.
  • Power systems and distribution including 120 Volt AC and 12 Volt DC wiring, solar and charging systems, grounding.
  • Reading, interpret schematics, topographical maps, and other technical information.
  • Configuring personal computers on windows operating system for communications needs and radio hardware programming.
  • Instructing users on the capabilities and operation of radio equipment and systems.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Experience with IP (Internet Protocol) Suite, including, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), IP(IPv4 and IPv6), UDP (User Datagram Protocol), DCCP (Datagram Congestion Control Protocol), DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol), HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and Voice over IP and Radio over IP.
  • Experience in planning and managing budgets.
