About The Mississaugas Of Scugog Island First Nation

Make a Difference Within Our Community

Currently, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) is looking for an experienced Water Wastewater Manager to join our community and work with our members and management team in Scugog, ON on a full-time basis. The hours of this role are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required to meet operational needs. Position includes after-hours emergency on-call rotation.

Essential Functions
Leadership
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team members, fostering a collaborative work environment, encouraging innovative thinking and problem-solving within the team
  • Responsible for managing employees including hiring, coaching, training, administration, and performance of reporting employees. Respond to sensitive and confidential human resource issues as required
  • Provide leadership in the coordination and delivery of the Drinking Water Quality Management System that contributes to the implementation of strategic initiatives for the Water and Wastewater Department to meet MSIFN’s Strategic Plan
Operations Management
  • Implementing a monitoring program in order to review and establish all maintenance and operational requirements, ensuring optimal performance
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for systems failures or environmental incidents
  • Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, budgets and resource allocation
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies that are aligned to compliance requirements
Regulatory Compliance
  • Manage and maintain compliance with legislation and regulations pertaining to water and wastewater
  • Regularly conduct monitoring and testing system performance and prepare detailed reporting to key stakeholders
  • Ensure all operations minimize environmental impact and comply with sustainability practices
  • Ensure Operators meet certification licensing requirements as per the Province of Ontario's Licensing Requirements including tracking of training and mentoring and supporting staff as required
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Prepare reporting to First Nation and Manager, Chief & Council and community as required
  • Maintain transparent communication with all stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, community, and other departments
  • Develop and maintain client relationships/partnerships supporting water wastewater initiatives.
  • Provide technical expertise, advice, analysis and coordination to First Nation Manager and Chief & Council, as required, on projects that have a water and/or wastewater component
PAY RATE

$63.56 to $78.61/hour (Pay Band A)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education relevant to the MECP Operator License program
  • Valid Province of Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Class II Water Treatment License and Class II Water Distribution License
  • Valid Province of Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Class II Wastewater Treatment License and Class II Wastewater Collection License
  • 5 Years operating and maintaining a Class 2 or higher water treatment plant subsystem, 5 Years operating and maintaining a Class 2 or higher wastewater treatment subsystem and wastewater collection subsystem, and distribution subsystem, 10+ years Ten years total work experience or equivalent training and experience as determined by the hiring committee
Specialization Required
  • 5 Years Minimum five years of experience in leadership and management positions
  • Demonstrated positive and proactive leadership capabilities, adept at leading a group of employees, contracted services and consultants; demonstrated commitment to developing high performance teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, stakeholders and community
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in water and wastewater systems, processes and technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in water and wastewater compliance legislation including Operation Certification testing with an understanding of the area’s programs and services and how the work of the area aligns with the objectives of the Department
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, computerized maintenance management systems and SCADA applications
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and new challenges. Commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and integrity in all operations
  • Competence in budgeting, cost control and financial reporting.
  • Ability to plan execute, and oversee projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget
  • Valid driver’s license and $1M liability insurance
  • CPIC acceptable to position upon conditional offer
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics
Considered An Asset
  • 3-year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
  • Work experience with a First Nation or Indigenous Organization
  • Safety Certifications: such as OHSA can be important for ensuring workplace safety
  • Project Management Professional: certification in project management can be beneficial
