Job description

Sr. Stress Engineering Specialist- Fuselage CANADA

Note: This position opening is in Canada and initially will be fully remote until the office is established.

About EOS Aircraft, Inc.:

EOS Aircraft, Inc. is an innovative aviation company dedicated to developing a new electric regional airplane that represents the next leap in sustainable aviation technology. Our mission is to redefine regional air travel by offering an environmentally friendly, efficient, and cutting-edge electric aircraft solution. We are on a journey to make air travel more sustainable and accessible and pride ourselves on innovation and collaboration. We are looking for a Senior Stress Engineering Specialist with fuselage (cockpit to tailcone) structural analysis experience (static, fatigue) in supporting its design from conceptual design phase to certification and contribute to our efforts in this exciting and challenging endeavor.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Structures & Design, the Senior Stress Engineering Specialist will use their strong track record of experience and be an integral part of an engineering team capable of developing an advanced groundbreaking sustainable airplane concept. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both technical development and problem-solving in a dynamic, fast-paced working environment. We are seeking an individual with strong technical skills and familiar with civilian compliance regulations for Part 25 aircraft (FAA/TCCA) and demonstrate compliance of designs as they progressed through the development cycles into flight test. The candidate must show a successful track record in analysis and sizing, finite element modeling and simulation, understanding materials and processes for various applications using both metallic and advanced composite materials, auditing and capturing design release processes and methods for various applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of conceptual and preliminary aircraft designs sizing from the conceptual development, analysis, optimization, and certification of primary and secondary aircraft structures, with a focus on composite materials.
  • Ensure performance, weight, and cost goals are met by leveraging advanced analysis and simulation tools focusing on the fuselage (Cockpit to Tailcone).
  • Use their knowledge and experience to play an integral part in supporting design lay outs for sizing for a variety of configurations and trade studies, including skin-stringer and/or sandwich for primary structures and integrate with secondary structures such as fairings and energy storage systems.
  • Perform structural analysis and sizing for a variety of configurations.
  • Establish and maintain best practices, continuous improvement, and traceability to ensure efficient and effective workflows by automating and linking manual processes for structural engineering processes and software tools, including solvers and processors such as NASTRAN, FEMAP, and PATRAN and optimizers including HYPERX.
  • Participate and lead stress reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and methodologies.
  • Support the transition of new materials and fabrication processes and novel technologies from research and development including advanced composite sandwich construction methods into production, considering manufacturing processes and the scalability of designs in parallel with associated methodologies development.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure design feasibility, manufacturability and compliance with regulatory requirements. Build bridges between structures and design, mass properties, and electrical groups by exploring concepts through demonstration using build and break approaches.
  • Support certification plans and material allowable data including a building block composite damage tolerance approach, to satisfy regulatory requirements (FAA, TCCA, EASA).
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate progress to the EOS team.
  • Ability to schedule tasks and provide status to upper-level management using the latest project tools.
  • Support the onboarding of future Stress engineers into the Structures team

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong foundation in aerospace structural engineering principles and legacy aircraft designs, including aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, and design.
  • Strong experience with engineering software tools used in aerospace structural analysis and legacy sizing methods. Proficiency withNASTRAN,PATRAN,or FEMAP.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, 3DX, NX)
  • Ability to set up and run, STATIC, MODAL, NON-LINEAR, and BUCKLING Solutions with NASTRAN
  • Experience with “hands-on” building block approaches for composite damage certification. Ability to apply tactile problem solving and rapid prototyping as an experimental learner
  • Strong experience in materials (metallic and composite) and manufacturing techniques that supports the best approach for design to manufacturing.
  • Proficient in advanced structural analysis techniques such as load redistribution methods, including diagonal tension for thin skin structures.
  • Experience dealing with the early onset of buckling prior to limit load and the building block testing necessary to mitigate the associated risk.
  • Proficient in addressing pressurization with other loading components and ability to optimize laminates in zones where hoop tension is combined with panel shear and axial loads.
  • Understanding of composite damage tolerance and strategies on how to certify configurations that offer additional weight efficiency. The ability to use analytical methods to predict damage growth and its effect on the residual strength of the structure.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive attitude towards tackling engineering challenges.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a focus on delivering high-quality results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations (e.g., FAA, TCCA, EASA).
  • Experience with addressing min gage structure and developing alternate approaches such as panelization to reduce the number of separate features such as traditional frames and stringers and that use less material overall for a lighter more weight efficient system.
  • Familiarity with various manufacturing methods for composites, autoclave prepreg, resin infusion, and out of autoclave methods and materials.
  • Experience with NASTRAN Design sensitivity using Optimization solutions SOL200 and with Fatigue and Durability analysis techniques
  • The use of optimization techniques, including HYPERX from Collier Aerospace, is a plus.

Desired Attributes:

  • Prior experience in an aerospace start-up or with (electric) aircraft development is highly valued.
  • Strong working knowledge of civilian aerospace regulations, including FAA, TCCA, and EASA with an established network of contacts and associations.
  • Proven experience in clean-sheet designs from concept phase through detailed design in a start-up OEM environment where the candidate has defined and initiated best practices, processes, and workflows from the ground up.
  • Published technical papers and presented them in a professional society and named as inventor on patent awards.
  • A strong passion for innovation in aviation and a commitment to advancing sustainable transport solutions.

Joining EOS Aircraft, Inc. means being part of a dynamic team that is passionate about creating the future of aviation. You'll work at the cutting edge of aerospace technology, contributing to the development of the world’s most sustainable regional aircraft. We offer a stimulating work environment where your contributions will have a direct impact on the world, promoting greener, more efficient air travel.
