Reporting to a Shipping Supervisor, the Truck Driver [Machine Operator] is responsible for the transport of products, dry goods and recycling material between various types of establishments using a company tractor with a pintle hook or fifth wheel. Operating a combination vehicle with one or two articulation points up to 25 meters long (straight truck is only 10.4 meters). May also load and unload trucks with or without helpers. Must recognize and be able to make minor mechanical repairs needed to keep truck in good working order. Complete vehicle circle checks and pre/post inspections on every trip.
Responsibilities
The nature of this position will require employee to perform a wide range of physical activities ranging from pushing and pulling heavy objects (50 – 100 lbs.) to crouching, kneeling, bending and handling. Repetitive finger motions are also required.
Drive company tractor and deliver products into the door to customers; including both private and government retailers.
Complete vehicle circle checks and pre/post inspections on a daily basis. In one day may have to complete this process on the tractor as well as up to four trailers (this includes adjustment of up to ten separate brakes in one combination or potentially twenty-two in one day).
Adjusting axle loading by sliding trailer tandems back or forward at up to ten times per day.
Adjusting axle loading on drive and steering axles by fifth wheel slide.
Use of tandem trailer slide to control amount of off-track when operating in tight and heavy traffic conditions coordinating with the Shipping office to complete adjustments before loading.
Proper operation of Jacobs and PAC engine brakes in good and adverse weather conditions.
Proper use of suspension air bags when dropping or recovering trailers on uneven, slippery or soft ground condition.
Responsible for proper maintenance and care of tractor, brakes, oil and other fluids, tires, lights, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum of two (2) years' experience related to the functions to be performed driving a Class 1 vehicle.
Class 1 BC Driver's License - Clean driver's abstract for two years from the closing date of the competition.
Air brakes certification.
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate preferred.
