Job description

Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role

The Integrations, Data Engineering and AI (IDEA) team within Samsara’s Business Technology organization is looking for a Data Operations Engineer to join our team. We enable various teams at Samsara to leverage data and AI to make data-driven decisions by delivering reliable integrations, APIs and data platforms for trustworthy data & analytics. We are a team that are passionate about leveraging quality data and AI to deliver a great customer experience. Our team promotes an agile, collaborative, supportive environment where diverse thinking, innovative design, and experimentation is welcomed and encouraged.

The Data Operations Engineer will be responsible for the health, stability, and performance of our production data platform, including data ingestion pipelines, processing jobs, and data warehousing. This role requires a blend of data engineering skills and operational rigor to ensure high availability and data quality for downstream consumers and business intelligence.

This is a remote position and is open to candidates residing in Canada.

You should apply if:
  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: Your efforts will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, reduce emissions, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You are the architect of your own career: If you put in the work, this role won’t be your last at Samsara. We set up our employees for success and have built a culture that encourages rapid career development, countless opportunities to experiment and master your craft in a hyper growth environment.
  • You’re energized by our opportunity: The vision we have to digitize large sectors of the global economy requires your full focus and best efforts to bring forth creative, ambitious ideas for our customers.
  • You want to be with the best: At Samsara, we win together, celebrate together and support each other. You will be surrounded by a high-caliber team that will encourage you to do your best.
In this role, you will:
  • Incident Response: Serve as a primary responder for production data incidents, quickly diagnosing root causes, implementing fixes, and ensuring data integrity.
  • Monitoring and Alerting: Design, implement, and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting systems for all production data pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Pipeline Management: Manage, deploy, and maintain data and integrations pipelines and APIs.
  • Performance Optimization: Continuously identify and implement optimizations to improve the speed, scalability, and efficiency of data processing jobs and API performance.
  • Data Quality: Develop and enforce data validation and quality checks within the pipelines to minimize errors and inconsistencies in production data.
  • Infrastructure: Collaborate with DevOps teams on managing the underlying infrastructure (AWS components) that hosts the data platform.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date documentation for all operational procedures, pipeline architectures, and troubleshooting runbooks.
  • Communicate incident status and SLA reports to management.
  • Develop & deploy data pipelines, backend ingestion or integration jobs to support minor enhancements and bug fixes.
  • Work with data from a variety of sources including but not limited to: CRM data, Product data, Marketing data, Order flow data, Support ticket volume data, Finance data etc.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.
Minimum requirements for the role:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, data science, information technology, or equivalent engineering program.
  • 3+ years of experience in a Data Engineering, Data Operations, or SRE role supporting production data environments.
  • Must have SQL experience to perform data analysis.
  • Experience with the following:
    • Python or similar scripting language
    • Exposure to ETL tools such as Fivetran, DBT, Workato or equivalent.
    • API: Exposure to python based API frameworks, API management tools.
    • RDBMS: MySQL, AWS RDS/Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle or equivalent.
    • Experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
    • Data warehouse: Databricks, Google Big Query, AWS Redshift, Snowflake or equivalent.

An ideal candidate has:
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to navigate complex distributed systems.
  • Comfortable in working with business users to assist with incidents and communicate proactively.
  • Engage directly with internal cross-functional stakeholders to understand their data challenges and provide targeted solutions.
