Overview

Requisition ID: 377437. Position: Community Mental Health Worker (CMHW) – Child and Adolescent program portfolio. Location: Mental Health Program, 365 Reimer Ave., Steinbach. Employer: Southern Health-Santé Sud. Union: MGEU. Status: Permanent, 1.0 FTE, in-person, 7.75 daily hours, days shift. Anticipated start date: 03/25/2025. Salary: As per MGEU Collective Agreement. Posting open until filled.

This position works within the Mental Health & Addictions department and engages in a multidisciplinary, recovery-oriented approach to psychosocial assessment, counselling, and rehabilitation for individuals referred to the mental health program. The CMHW collaborates with primary health care providers, specialists, families, and services/agencies to support independence, self-responsibility, community integration, and personal wellness. The CMHW applies case management functions as needed, particularly for individuals with enduring mental illness, focusing on functional assessment, skill development, relapse prevention, and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities
  • Provide psychosocial assessment, consultation, and evidence-informed counselling interventions.
  • Deliver psychosocial rehabilitation within a framework of recovery, empowerment, self-determination, and responsibility.
  • Offer time-limited, goal-oriented, change-focused interventions and/or consultations based on informed consent and voluntary participation.
  • Apply trauma-informed care principles and crisis management and suicide intervention skills as part of practice.
  • Work within the Child and Adolescent program portfolio, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and integrating treatment with primary care providers, families, and related services.
  • Maintain competency in accordance with Southern Health-Santé Sud policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited post-secondary program in Health-Related Social Sciences (e.g., BSW, BScMH, BScPN, BN, RPN) or other relevant qualifications.
  • Master’s degree is an asset (e.g., Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Clinical Social Worker, Family Therapist, Counselling Psychology, or equivalent).
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience providing evidence-based therapy to children and/or adolescents; 3-5 years preferred. Minimum two (2) years of supervised counselling experience.
  • Experience and training in trauma-informed care, Brief Treatment models, CBT, DBT, and related modalities.
  • Experience in completing psychosocial assessments and mental status examinations.
Certifications and Licensure
  • Active license/registration to practice as required by the professional association and provincial regulation.
  • Certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST).
Skills and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development and mental health issues, including suicide risk assessment and risk management.
  • Strong psychosocial assessment skills and evidence-informed therapeutic approaches.
  • Understanding of recovery principles and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Knowledge of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications across the age spectrum.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and telehealth modalities; ability to prepare written communication and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work in a culturally informed and diverse environment; respect for confidentiality and data protection.
  • Required bilingual proficiency for designated bilingual positions; otherwise proficiency in English is essential.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job; no hazardous conditions; occasional evenings and weekends may be required; travel to other regional facilities may be necessary.
