The Personal Support Worker (PSW) reports to the Director of Care and under the direction of the Unit Supervisor provides personal care, reports changes in resident status and documents where applicable. Enhances restorative care by promoting independence of activities of daily living. Enhances the therapeutic effects of the bathing process and provides the resident with an environment and bathing options, which meet their needs and add to their quality of life.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs a wide variety of tasks that include providing assistance with personal care and activities of daily living for residents.
  2. Provides direction and guidance to residents in the provision of activities of daily living as per their plan of care, ensuring to maximize their independence and allowing for choice and self-determination of their care.
  3. Monitor resident’s wellbeing and report changes in their physical and emotional conditions to registered staff.
  4. Responsible for accurate documentation on the residents for each shift adhering to relevant policies and procedures.
  5. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the home including the Code of Conduct.
  6. Maintain effective and professional communication with residents, families, and fellow coworkers.
  7. Promote the Vision, Mission, and Values as well as Residents Bill of Rights.
  8. Maintain a quality focus in all things.
  9. Ensure the health and safety of residents, families, and co-workers.
  10. Other duties as assigned and or indicated in the Job Task Inventory.
  11. Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) according to the plan of care.
  12. Monitors resident safety in accordance with the plan of care; implement and follow precautionary and preventative measures (e.g. skin impairment, falls, expressive behaviours) set out in the care plan.
  13. Document each task of daily activities and care provided in electronic health records accurately and in a timely manner.
  14. Participates in resident care conference/team meetings and provides information to aid in the development of care plans.
  15. Displays a sense of spontaneity and ability to change the moment positively for people.
  16. Ensures that personal care items are clean, labeled, and accessible to residents.
  17. Use of Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) when dealing with and managing residents with expressive behaviours.
  18. Must have knowledge of and adhere to practices of safe transfers; safe use of mechanical lifts in accordance with the policies of the Home.
  19. Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment for residents during the provision of care.
  20. Assists with meal service and nourishment delivery to residents and provides feeding assistance as required.

Qualifications:

  1. PSW Certification from a program that is at least six hundred (600) hours in duration counting both class time and practical experience.
  2. The PSW program must meet the program requirements set by the Ministry of Colleges or Universities for an Ontario postsecondary institution or district school board to issue a personal support worker certificate.
  3. An RN or RPN who in the opinion of the Director of Care has adequate skills and knowledge to perform the duties of a Personal Support Worker.
  4. A student who is enrolled in an educational program for RN or RPN and who in the opinion of the Director of Care has adequate skills and knowledge to perform the duties of a Personal Support Worker.
  5. Experience with person-centered care philosophy/models.
  6. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  7. Good interpersonal skills.
  8. To show evidence of being focused on people’s feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  9. To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals’ rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  10. Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
  11. As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements.
  12. Two supervisory references required.
  13. Provide proof of all required vaccines. The Employer strongly recommends to “stay up to date” with the recommended vaccines. Vaccination requirements are subject to changes as determined by the Employer.
