Job description

The Team:
The Archaeology Branch is a dedicated team within the Forest Resiliency and Archaeology Division at the Ministry of Forests, working to protect and celebrate British Columbia’s rich archaeological heritage. This team plays a key role in reviewing permit applications under the Heritage Conservation Act, maintaining the provincial heritage register, and ensuring responsible access to archaeological information. Their work supports both conservation efforts and public understanding of the province’s unique cultural legacy. Learn more about us at the following link: Archaeology in BC.

The Role:
Join our passionate team and help safeguard British Columbia’s cultural heritage by reviewing archaeological permit applications, guiding complex investigations, and shaping how heritage resources are managed across the province. Whether you're reviewing permit applications, consulting with First Nations, or guiding the protection of archaeological sites, each day offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on British Columbia’s cultural heritage.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Archaeology; OR, Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of recent (within the last seven (7) years) experience in archaeological resource management, specifically research, field work, and reporting.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and stakeholders in a natural resource management or cultural resource management context.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in archaeological resource management, particularly experience working in the Northwest Coast, and/or the Interior Plateau, and/or Subarctic/Boreal Forest culture areas.
  • Experience as a field director.
  • The ability to hold, or be eligible to hold, Heritage Conservation Act Inspection permits, or equivalent (i.e.: permits from other jurisdictions).
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Provisos:

  • Willing and able to travel and conduct field inspections, which may include travel to remote areas and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

For questions regarding this position, please contact Nathan.P.Friesen@gov.bc.ca.
