Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting, the Senior Manager, Financial Reporting will play a key role in the preparation of OMERS consolidated financial statements and other external and internal reporting and analysis requirements. Researching and documenting OMERS position on certain technical accounting issues, assisting with the high quality and timely execution of monthly and quarterly corporate close process, and enhancing process efficiencies and controls. This role also involves collaboration with the wider Corporate Finance team and with finance teams across the enterprise. It provides opportunities to work alongside senior leaders across the OMERS organization and with the external auditor, and develop new skillsets for your growing career.

The incumbent will demonstrate strength in technical accounting and accounting standards, experience in financial reporting and a track record of working on and leading high performing teams. You are insightful and curious, take pride in producing high quality work and possess a desire to build a team community. A positive mindset and can-do attitude, coupled with strong communication skills, will be paramount to the incumbent's success.

We believe that time together in the office is important for OMERS and Oxford, the strength of our employees, and the work we do for our pension members. Our hybrid work guideline requires teams to come to the office a minimum of 4 days per week.

In this role you will be a key member of the OMERS Corporate Finance team. Our ambitions are high: we aim to be the best corporate finance team in the Canadian pension industry.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Keeping abreast of accounting standards development for pension plans (Section 4600), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and regulatory standards published by FSRA. Researching, documenting, and reviewing conclusions with respect to complex accounting issues to develop our enterprise-wide accounting policies. Presenting to senior leaders on issues and recommendations, and providing technical accounting updates and advice to the Corporate Finance team and our finance business partners.

  • Compiling and reviewing the OMERS consolidated financial statements and other external reporting requirements, while ensuring a robust internal controls process and the accuracy of financial reporting

  • Ensuring the maintenance and continuous improvement of process documentation and strong internal controls over financial accounting and reporting. This includes collaborating with the team in the optimization and sustainment of a newly implemented accounting system, reviewing and improving current processes with a key focus on efficiency and resiliency of future state

  • Supporting the enterprise-wide coordination of OMERS monthly close processes and timelines as a key interface with OMERS Business Unit Finance Teams, and supporting the final delivery of reporting to key stakeholders including the Board of Directors and Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA).

  • Monthly and quarterly accounting, comprising review of journal entries and account reconciliations

  • Coordinating and liaising with internal and external auditors for fieldwork, as well as accounting and internal control matters

  • Collaborating with a team of financial professionals to strengthen culture and community, and driving excellence and expertise

  • Use appropriate judgment in dealing with issues and requests, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize work, balance resource requirements and determine solutions.

  • Other contributions, as the team may need and as opportunities arise

To succeed in this role, you have:

  • 7+ years’ relevant experience in progressive financial reporting roles leading successful teams of accounting professionals

  • Post-secondary degree in business, accounting, or finance with a CPA designation

  • 3+ years in a leadership role

  • Strong understanding of accounting standards for pension plans in Canada and IFRS with particular technical expertise in financial instruments. Strong accounting acumen and practical application skills.

  • Experience with the processes and mechanics of financial accounting and reporting in a multi-business, international, complex enterprise. Ability to challenge the status quo and deliver new/innovative improvements to financial processes

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to various levels

  • Experience with Oracle and Workiva would be an asset

And you demonstrate:

  • A people-first focus with a desire to develop meaningful, trusting relationships across all levels;

  • A teammate mentality looking to drive team success through humility, self-awareness, and empathetic and servant leadership;

  • A sense of urgency, optimism, and a desire to deliver excellence;

  • A desire to drive debate, to speak candidly and to listen thoughtfully;

  • A self-starter, proactive and motivated to create positive change, a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Results-orientation, able to lead expectations, work under tight timelines and handle challenging priorities

  • An adaptable mindset, energized by new opportunities and challenges.

  • A dedication to accuracy and timeliness.

  • A willingness to understand the detail when needed, yet balanced with the ability to see the big picture.

  • An innate solution-orientation, with the ability to take complex inputs and generate and communicate practical outcomes.

As one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans, our people-first culture is at its best when our workforce reflects the communities where we live and work — and the members we proudly serve.
