What is the role?

In this role, you will contribute to the design, evaluation, and construction of transportation and transit structures, including bridges, underground transit stations, culverts, retaining walls, and overhead supports. You will assist with technical documentation, design calculations, construction administration, and site inspections. The role involves collaboration with senior engineers and project managers on project coordination, contract documentation, proposals, and client meetings. You will ensure quality and safety standards are met while developing professional skills through mentorship, training, and exposure to challenging projects.

In This Role, Your Duties And Responsibilities Will Include
Engineering & Design
  • Assist in the design of new routine and complex transportation structures (such as bridges, underground transit stations, structural culverts, retaining walls, high mast poles, and overhead sign supports).
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports, such as Structural Design Reports and Structural Evaluation Reports.
  • Perform construction administration, reviewing shop drawings and responding to RFI's to ensure conformance with contract documents.
Project Coordination
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers on design team coordination, project scheduling, and daily project management tasks.
  • Gain exposure to project management principles and practices, with opportunities for mentorship and training aimed at developing future project management capabilities.
  • Compile and prepare contract documents, such as special provisions, tender item lists, quantity takeoffs and cost estimates, working day estimates, etc.
  • Participate in project meetings, addressing design queries and providing technical input.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and fee estimates in the pursuit of new project work.
  • Represent LEA in client and stakeholder meetings to support successful project delivery.
Field Work & Inspections
  • Conduct site visits to collect data, perform field reviews, and document observations for reports on existing and new structures.
  • Inspect construction activities to verify compliance with design specifications and project requirements.
  • Assist in identifying potential issues on site and provide recommendations to resolve design or construction challenges.
Quality & Safety
  • Ensure quality control and assurance throughout projects, maintaining design accuracy, technical clarity, drawing readability, and compliance with design standards.
  • Adhere to health and safety policies and report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards to the supervisor.
Professional Development
  • Continuously develop professional skills through training, workshops, seminars, and professional association involvement to stay updated on industry trends and software.
  • Support additional assignments within the sectors of the Structures Division.
The Qualifications You Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering (Master’s degree is an asset).
  • Working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
  • 1-2 years of experience in the design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of bridge, transportation, or transit‑related structures.
  • Experience working on projects for MTO, TTC, Metrolinx, or municipal clients is a strong asset.
  • Good knowledge of CSA S6 (CHBDC), CSA A23, CSA S16, OBC, OPSS, and MTO Structural and Rehabilitation Manuals.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge, MathCAD, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and willingness to conduct site inspections as required.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and maintaining current technical expertise.
