JOB DESCRIPTION
An Engineer, Industrial Engineering designs, plans, and executes improvements to processes, tools, workstations, and equipment for high quality, efficient operations in ship construction, delivery, and repair. They have knowledge of job areas typically obtained through work experience, mentorship, and hands on experience. They are developing and applying practical job knowledge, typically obtained through a combination of training, coaching, and work experience in a technical, process-oriented environment.
The Engineer works independently with general supervision; problems faced are difficult and a scientific methodology is used to analyze it, identify root causes to the problem, test solutions, and standardize successful solutions. The Engineer should influence stakeholders with a structured change management methodology and explanation of facts, policies, and practices. They will be expected to work in an assigned job scope in theoretical, practical, and/or lean six sigma methodologies in a shipbuilding environment. The Engineer is expected to work in an assigned job scope as defined in the Industrial Engineering Management Plan, Irving Way of Shipbuilding, and Continuous Improvement Framework.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Actively manage proactive scope of work, which could include developing standards, performance metrics, capacity analysis, overall equipment effectiveness, material flow, visual management, authoring processes, industry benchmarking, research and development, and/or project planning.
• Lead the development of innovation project proposals, including financial, business, and technical analysis, seeking guidance from subject matter experts where required.
• Identify and action opportunities for Continuous Improvement within Industrial Engineering scope of work.
• Identify and manage mitigation plans for risks associated with Industrial Engineering activities and initiatives.
• Lead cross-functional improvement and innovation projects, including creative technical problem solving and effective stakeholder management, seeking guidance from technical subject matter experts where required.
• Utilize leading change principles to effectively engage stakeholders and institutionalize change.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.).
• Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or equivalent.
  • Equivalent is defined as sufficient experience in an Engineering role paired with a Bachelor of Engineering, with the expectation of submitting your membership request to Engineers Nova Scotia to become P. Eng. certified if chosen as the successful candidate.
• Intermediate knowledge and/or application of Change Management and Project Management. Certification considered an asset.
• Ability to model and analyze systems in a simplified format for the purpose of illustrating the transformation of inputs, outputs and added value.
• Training and experience in lean/six sigma or other improvement methodologies, i.e. yellow, lean, or green belt or equivalent, or interest and ability to obtain.
• Demonstrated experience (typically 4-10 years) in an industrial or project management environment with a focus on analyzing and improving operational performance.
• Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, navigate within a 3D model and/or simulation of the ship, develop & markup drawings, develop presentations and reports, develop technical specifications, and perform technical investigations.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and manage project schedules, budgets, requirements, and risk registers.
• Demonstrated ability to develop project business cases by performing financial cost/benefit analysis, business impact analysis, and options analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and document scientific testing and trials of technologies.
• Analytical problem solving and data analysis.
• Ability to make risk-based technical decisions.
• Ability to develop project scope or statements of work.
• Verbal and written communication of issues to internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to engage employees at most levels of the organization.
• Confidently engage in technical information sharing in cross-functional problem solving.
• Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
• Lead/facilitate workshops and business updates.

Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
