Duties

Supervises the human resources and work of a laboratory diagnostic testing service unit.

Plans and delivers accreditation programs and specialized testing, including review of data and authorization of results to internal and/or external clients.

Collects, analyses, evaluates and interprets data; prepares presentations, reports, and scientific literature; provides authoritative advice and recommendations to senior staff, management, or at conferences in the area of expertise.

Leads scientific projects, laboratory investigations and validation studies for diagnostic and testing purposes.

Responds to emergency issues to evaluate analytical tests and develops project protocols.

Provides scientific information and advice to laboratory management and stakeholders on subjects in the area of expertise.

Represents the unit, team, lab network or Agency on local, national or international committees, working groups and project teams.

Essential qualifications

Education — Bachelor’s Degree in a natural, physical or applied science with a major or specialization in plant sciences, plant taxonomy, or related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution. Applicants with degrees from non-Canadian institutions are responsible for obtaining certification of equivalency.

Experience — EE1: Experience in studying, identifying or testing plants or seeds in a laboratory or research setting. EE2: Experience in supervising a work team. EE3: Experience in adopting innovative approaches or emerging technologies in routine work.

Essential qualifications, including competencies, abilities, knowledge and personal suitability, will vary by position. Additional qualifications may be considered.

Asset qualifications

Education — Advanced Degree in a natural, physical or applied science with a specialization in plant sciences or related discipline.

Experience — AEx1 to AEx8 listed below (illustrative examples, see original posting).

  • AEx1: Experience conducting or using testing procedures for seed germination or purity tests on seed.
  • AEx2: Experience conducting plant or seed identification.
  • AEx3: Experience delivering or implementing programs with a client service focus.
  • AEx4: Experience in plant or seed taxonomy for identification.
  • AEx5: Experience interpreting or applying regulations or standards.
  • AEx6: Experience using digital imaging or AI for a biological science diagnostic application.
  • AEx7: Experience in project management for multiple teams or collaborators.
  • AEx8: Supervisor experience.
Conditions of employment
