The Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Engineer who has the interest and drive to join our Ontario and Atlantic Canada Bridge Team, to be based in one of our Dartmouth, Fredericton, or St. John’s offices.

We believe WSP has assembled the best and most vibrant bridge engineering group in Canada with teams based throughout the country. Reporting to team lead in Dartmouth, this position will be responsible for the preliminary and detailed design of bridges and other civil structures for federal, provincial and municipal clients in Atlantic Canada and Ontario. Our bridge team has a highly qualified staff experienced in bridge planning, new design, rehabilitation design, inspection, evaluation, and project administration and collaborates with other teams based in Ontario and the rest of Canada, sharing work and knowledge. Our senior staff have published numerous technical papers on bridge design, rehabilitation and construction, and continue to be active on a range of technical and bridge code committees. What you can expect to do here
  • Carry out preliminary and detailed analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other civil structures for all levels of government
  • Manage bridge engineering projects, coordinate design teams, and support project management teams and technical teams across WSP
  • Prepare engineering drawings
  • Check designs and drawings
  • Prepare specifications and contract documents
  • Prepare form of tenders, quantity take-offs and construction cost estimates
  • Review shop drawings and provide engineering support during construction
  • Carry out contract administration and construction supervision
  • Prepare reports and proposals
  • Undertake bridge inspections, assessments, and reports
  • Set up project meetings, record meeting minutes, and maintain action item list
  • May be required to provide technical guidance and direction to support staff, contractors, and/or vendors
  • Demonstrates sound written, verbal, interpersonal, analytical and application skills
  • Works well under pressure to meet project deadlines
What you’ll bring to WSP
  • University degree in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer with 5-10 years demonstrated experience in structural design and bridge engineering in Canada
  • Superior technical understanding, design abilities, and current on bridge technologies
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis software used in bridge design
  • Specific areas of expertise required are in the planning, preliminary and detail design, and construction of bridges of standard and complex geometry, and culverts. A thorough knowledge of current Canadian design codes and standards is essential
  • Experience with inspection, assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures
  • Experienced in report and proposal writing
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work on several projects at a time with multiple design teams
  • A committed team player with a willingness to help others and collaborate with team members
  • A valid driver's license
