Position
Position purpose summary: The role provides service to customers, sorts incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.
Responsibilities
- Operations: Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
- Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
- Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
- Process cash and debit transactions with accuracy and minimal voids, overages, or shortages; adhere to store policy on cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
- Process donations by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing.
- Respond to customer inquiries by phone or in person with knowledge of stock.
- Support store security by monitoring activity within the store.
- Assist with store layout and displays to attract customers and maintain an attractive, tidy store.
- Assist with inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
- Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory on the sales floor and remove items as directed.
- Handle merchandise safely and order inventory rotation; bag textiles for recycling and place metal recycling appropriately.
- Assist donors with contributions, unload donations and place stock appropriately.
- Maintain proper sorting/processing of goods and ensure pricing per store policy; perform other duties as required.
Health and Safety: Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, clean spills; no obstacles inside/outside the store). Maintain an attractive, organized, safe appearance; comply with OH&S Act and Salvation Army health and safety policies.
Working relationships
Critical Relationship Management: Internal: Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff; External: Guests, vendors.
Managerial/Technical: Reports directly to the Store Manager. Direct reports: None.
Financial and Material Management
- Moderate material responsibilities.
- Uses or maintains organization assets according to guidelines.
- Does not process financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

Working Conditions
- This is a permanent full-time position.
- Work schedule may vary; includes weekdays and/or Saturdays.
- Ability to stand for long periods; ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds; bending, twisting, and reaching required.
- Wearing gloves as a precaution when handling unknown contents as needed.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Willingness to support the Salvation Army mission in Canada and related responsibilities.
- Compliance with OH&S Act and Salvation Army safety policies.
- Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
- Completion of some high school coursework; alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge
- Few months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service.
- Knowledge of lifting guidelines.
- Cash handling experience and familiarity with cash registers, bank deposits, and related reports.
- Product brand awareness is an asset; experience in a computerized environment.
Skills and Capabilities
- Attention to detail; self-motivated and disciplined.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 29 lbs frequently; able to bend, twist, pull, and push.
Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactorily to The Salvation Army.
Location This job posting is for the Airdrie Thrift Store located at 1-125 Main Street, Airdrie, AB T4B 0P7.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $20.62 with a maximum of $24.74. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
