Job description
Overview

The Team: At the Northwest Fire Centre, you'll join a dynamic and established team of diverse individuals dedicated to wildfire management and safety. The team comprises Unit crews (22 people) and Initial Attack crews (4), with initial attack bases hosting between 18 and 52 members. You will collaborate with professionals in wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from across the province. The Fire Crew leader plays a critical role in executing fire suppression and hazard plans and ensuring crews are effectively mobilized in incident response. The Role

In this role, you'll lead crews on the fireline and in day-to-day fieldwork around communities, playing a vital part in keeping these communities safe and resilient. Your work in wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery will have a direct impact across British Columbia. This opportunity is in a fast-paced, team-based environment where your efforts contribute to the well-being of BC's citizens.

Qualifications: Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 or equivalent; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and education may be considered; AND
  • 2 seasons forest fire related experience;
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid (formerly OFA Level 2) with Transportation endorsement; AND
  • Successful completion of New Recruit Boot Camp or Agency Equivalent; AND
  • Successfully complete pre-employment fitness standard; AND
  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type; AND
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

* Intermediate First Aid is the new name for Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2, as of November 2024. The name change aligns with CSA standards.

Preferences
  • Attended BC Wildfire Provincial Crew Leader training or agency equivalent.
  • Prior Supervisory experience.
  • Prior Fireline Supervisory experience.
  • Incident Commander 5 certification or higher as per the Incident Command System.
  • Previous BC Wildfire Crew Leader experience such as temporary assignment as a Crew Leader.
  • Single Resource Leader 1 certification or higher.
  • Higher education in Resource Management or related field.
  • Experience delivering education or training to Adult audience.
  • Qualified Faller Assessor, Qualified Faller Trainer, Certified Faller or Faller in Training or industry equivalent.

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
  • To stay current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat, and mountainous terrain in remote locations.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, with standby as needed under the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements.

10 positions available. Positions available in Terrace, Hazelton, Telkwa, Burns Lake, and Houston. This position has full-time on-site requirements.
