Senior Legal Assistant - Litigation

Woodward is seeking an experienced Senior Litigation Assistant to join our talented and dedicated team in our Victoria, BC, office location supporting lawyers engaged in complex Aboriginal law litigation. This role offers meaningful work that leverages your extensive litigation experience to a focused area of specialization and an opportunity to evolve in a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will support litigators with primary focus on Aboriginal, environmental and natural resources law.

This position is intended to provide general litigation and legal assistant support to multiple lawyers in a variety of high-profile matters within multiple jurisdictions across Canada.

This career opportunity offers meaningful work and progression that leverages your extensive litigation experience to our focused areas of practice.

  • Independently maintains and organizes calendars, correspondence, court schedules and bring-forward systems; schedules and coordinates meetings; and assists with day-to-day file and practice management.
  • Edits and formats documents such as correspondence, legal memos, agreements, reports, litigation records and materials for filing in all levels of court.
  • Follows court procedures for the preparation, filing and service of court documents.
  • Coordinates with court registries, handles logistics and arranges for court appearances.
  • Extensively uses litigation software, databases, and document management processes and systems to provide legal support services for complex litigation matters.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of work experience in litigation as a focused area of specialization.
  • Post secondary (diploma, certificate, program) for paralegal or legal studies strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of rules of civil procedure in BC, Ontario, (including the ability to determine rules and procedures of tribunals or courts in other jurisdictions), for the Federal Court and the Supreme Court.
  • Familiarity with electronic court registries, e-filing and e-hearing platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving and resourcefulness using good decision making or judgement.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced use and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with BC Online, LTSA searches, litigation software, and document management systems.
  • Reliability, flexibility, and dependability are essential for this position.
  • Experience working with Indigenous nations, communities, businesses, or organizations would be considered an asset.
